how much should a wedding ring cost?

... a follow up to my question about looking on Etsy today for my wedding ring ...

I'm 100% madly in love with this ring (from Brilliant Earth) but I think it's a little overpriced at $950... My FH's plain white gold band was $299... My dress costs more than that and I'm only wearing it once, versus, like, every day for the rest of my life, but still, it seems like a lot, and we ARE on a budget.

A- what's a reasonable price to spend on a wedding ring of this style?

B- does anyone have any recommendations for something similar elsewhere?

Thanks all!

This Megan Thorne Wood Nymph ring is $770. Her jewelry is gorgeous and very well made.

ETA: If you love the ring you posted, go for it.

There is a Brilliant Earth store at Roosevelt Field Mall on Long Island. Maybe there's one even closer to you. Have you seen it in person?

@firstoneat56 - I got so excited and looked up the Roosevelt Field Mall, but it looks like that's a Blue Nile store, instead of Brilliant Earth - still exciting, and I may take a road trip out to try out some stuff!

My band was $2800 but it was custom made and has hand rolled filigrees and hand engraved milgrain/designs as well as diamonds.

The labor that goes into details like that add to the cost, so the milgrain on that ring that you posted is probably bumping up the price in addition to the reasons PP described.

ETA: I personally decided the wedding band wasn't an area that I wanted to skimp on for budget's sake - so if you really love it, I think it's totally reasonable!

Both my ring and FH's wedding band are from brilliant earth. We both felt like spending money on something that significant was very important to us plus my engagement ring only fits with the wedding band made for it and FH wanted our rings to match.

This is a very personal decision. I'm sure you could find something similar for less money.

I don't know, my ring was about $950 too and it has WAY more diamonds than that, and they're bigger.

It's a beautiful ring but the price doesn't really seem in line. I found a lot of stunning ones at Shane Co that were super high quality and fairly priced. Do you have one near you?

Your cost is reasonable. I got 2 channel bands to go with my e-ring. For 1500 and that was a huge sale price.

@Mrs Richmond - no Shane Co's near me :/ They don't appear to be an east coast thing... but I'm on their site and I like this one... it's an idea! Thanks!

I'm getting each of our bands from Robbins Brothers and they're not over $500 for each. It's possible to find a detailed band without spending $1k.

My problem is that "local" for me is NYC... which is A- super expensive, and B- generally not full of sweet mom and pop businesses. I would love to shop local, but I may have to dig to find a good place to do so.

If you love it and can afford it, go for it!

my ring was a splurge. i've never worn any rings until i got engaged, and probably won't ever wear any rings besides my engagement ring and wedding band, so i wanted to get something i truly would love for the rest of my life.

@OP I would suggest checking out some local shops in Westchester or Long Island if you can get out of the 5 boroughs, since there aren't many in NYC. But your budget is ultimately up to you - I decided on one that I couldn't stop going back to in the store and it just happened to be on sale from $550 to $250 (Zales) but hubby spent more on his which is a plain gold band from Blue Nile.

I got my wedding band custom to match my engagement ring. It's a unique setting because it has a flat bottom. The channel setting was hard to match so it was easier to match the stone size and setting. My band was $2000 and his was $1200. A little pricey, however, it has lifetime warranty (diamond replacement, resize, breaks, etc). We also aren't doing wedding gifts for each other so it was ok to splurge a little.

Diamonds Direct is where we bought all of rings from. We have gotten at least 20% off plus military discount on all our rings. We also were able to wiggle the price for. Ring repeat customers. Never had anything but spectacular service.

Mine was $900, white gold and diamonds on the top half. So yours seems a little much to me but I can't tell how it's made. The craftsmanship might be more for something like that.

    Haha @OG Kathryn!

I think there was a similar ring posted on an etsy thread earlier.

Where is your engagement ring from? My ring is from a small jeweler and they create all of their jewelry on-site. I would be concerned that the metals and style would vary depending on where you purchase the wedding ring.

But, I anticipate mine will cost about $500.

It really depends. What something should cost is so subjective. I think as long as a person doesn't go into debt for it, then it's "reasonable." Some can afford more, some can afford less. Some can but prefer to spend less. It really depends.

I think the most important factors are 1. You love it and 2. You can afford it.

My wedding band cost $2,300. It still feels like a lot to me, but it was the perfect match and we could afford it (even if I still get sticker shock over it). I'm sure there are many beautiful bands out there that cost more or cost less than mine but this was "the one" for me. Both FH and I felt that way.

Also, I don't find anything wrong with upgrading but I want my now band to be my forever band, if I can afford it.
