how much should a wedding ring cost?

Sarah, on June 22, 2017 at 12:31 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 39

... a follow up to my question about looking on Etsy today for my wedding ring ...

I'm 100% madly in love with this ring (from Brilliant Earth) but I think it's a little overpriced at $950... My FH's plain white gold band was $299... My dress costs more than that and I'm only wearing it once, versus, like, every day for the rest of my life, but still, it seems like a lot, and we ARE on a budget.

A- what's a reasonable price to spend on a wedding ring of this style?

B- does anyone have any recommendations for something similar elsewhere?

Thanks all!

Really the answer to that question varies. Many factors go into the cost of a ring; quality of metal, stones, labor, etc. I believe my band cost about $800 and its not elaborate by any means. Do some digging, see if you can find that band anywhere else. Or maybe take photos in to a store and see what it would cost you to have it made.

What kind of metal is that ring, and are there any stones in it? I can't tell from the picture. If it's white gold with no stones - yes, that seems pricey. If it's platinum (with or without stones) that seems more in line.

It's a beautiful ring! I don't know of any similar to it, but if you take a picture with you to different jewelers, you may be able to find something along those lines that you like.

I think this is a what can you afford question. I don't think there is a right answer here. I was fine with a plain super thin band, but FH wanted to get me the diamond pave eternity band because it matches my E ring. So we spent $1,500 on mine.

How do you expect us to answer that? it depends on your budget, how much you make. Could be anywhere from $20 to $10k?

I am buying a white gold band for my FH at Kay jeweler and mine is coming from zales. His will be $500 and mine is $1100 for the band. I honestly wouldn't buy from etsy or online only because I like the lifetime warranty if it ever fades or needs to be resized. But that's just me. That is a good price if that's what your going for

The ring in the picture is white gold with very small accent diamonds. I suppose I'm gathering from responses so far that this isn't an unreasonable price for something like that. I looked at a few in store options without the design, just spaced out small accent diamonds, for about $350 - $450, that's why I thought it was more than I should spend, but the more I look at it the more I love it. Still looking...

Depends on what you can afford and what you want.

I'm pro- you keep what you get forever. I don't believe in upgrading

I agree @Lindsey. Friends are telling me that I can just get a fancy anniversary band at a later date, but I want my wedding band to be the one I love!

Sarah--Brilliant earth and other companies like it have a fairly high markup as do many chain jewelry stores. Try taking that photo into a local, privately owned jeweler to see if they have anything similar, can order something similar, or have are able to custom make it for you. Their prices are typically more competitive. My band was less than 1/2 price from elsewhere by purchasing through a private small shop.

(Mine ended up being $550 for a 1.5mm rose gold eternity band vs the 1200 I was initially looking at because the jeweler had it in stock for awhile and needed to clear some merchandise)

He spent about $4000 on mine but it is custom and in the house made jewelry. But for his band it is going to range from $500-800. It really depends what you want, and if its too expensive you can always upgrade later if thats what you guys want.

I think that that price doesn't match that ring. I'd shop around at smaller local jewelry stores and see if they can make you something similar for cheaper.

You can always upgrade the ring, so you don't have to wear that specific one for the rest of your life.

I would expect the diamonds to be a tad larger for that price, but you are paying for the artistry of the ring. price of white gold is expensive. it seems like you got a good deal on your hubby's band. i would see if you fall in love with something similar elsewhere, if not i would go for it. you are going to be wearing it everyday for life so you should love whatever ring you get.

It's a gorgeous ring...but it's a ring. I'm not sure of your financial situation, but personally, I wouldn't pay that much for a ring. It may be my age...but I find it so hard to justify spending what I feel is a LOT of money on something that means just as much if it were $10.

Go onto Etsy, there are a lot of good artists out there that work in differenetals and with stones that look as beautiful as a diamond. My fiance got my engagement ring on Etsy, it is vintage from the late 1800's. It was a fraction of the price of something brand new in a jewelry store and I love it just the same! You two will do what's right for you any way you go! Good luck in your marriage!

    Https://www.overstock.com/Jewelry-Watches/Miadora-10k-White-Gold-1-10ct-TDW-Diamond-Vintage-Stackable-Wedding-Band-Ring/7554164/product.html?refccid=M2EB5W7JZQYKOE2IANEO3G37KU&searchidx=108&keywords=&refinement=jewelry%20type:Fine|brand:Miadora|

This isn't identical to that ring, but to me has a similar style. I'd suggest just seeing what overstock.com has to offer. Their prices are good, and they have a good return policy.

It's a personal decision. What have you budgeted for a ring?

How much should a wedding ring cost?

It really depends on your budget and what you and FH can afford. I don't think there is an appropriate answer to how much a ring "should" cost. I know a friend of a friend who insisted her FH should spend three months of his salary on a ring for her and he obliged and spent around $20K on her ring. FH spent almost five figures on my e-ring (haven't decided if I want a band). I have a relative who got married young and they couldn't afford much so she wears a $30 band. Each of our rings are just as meaningful no matter the cost; it just depends on what you can afford. Depending on the type of metal and the type of jewels in your wedding band, no, I don't think that is too much. You will likely wear it for a looooong time and definitely everyday. I also agree you could probably take it to a local jeweler and get a similar ring for cheaper or a ring with slightly larger stones for the same price.

ETA - you have two ring posts going right now asking the same exact question. Please just do one post, ask all your questions, you will get more answers.

Keep in mind that this is 18K white gold and minimum SI1 diamonds (I stalked the ring on Brilliant Earth) which are guaranteed conflict free - all factors that are increasing the price on this ring.

Do I think you can have this made for less - likely...with those specs and no hastle? Less likely. That said, you will probably end up only save $1-200 and there is no guarantee you will love a custom version. If you are in fact 0 madly in love with this ring, and considering you will wear it every day - my advice is to just go for it.

Especially since BE offers a 30 day no hassle return and free shipping...you might not love it as much once you see it - send it back, problem solved.

True. Thank you @Jaylynn! I may just bite the bullet and order it and send it back if it's just not right...
