Jennifer, on December 30, 2010 at 10:12 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

Okay...silly question but I just purchased the postage for my wedding invitations and I'm hoping its enough its about the size of a card. it shouldn't be more than .44 right?

I was told by my lady at the post office (we're on a first name basis...) that most wedding invites are $0.61. It's not about size, it's about weight. And most invitation paper is heavier than a say a greeting card. If you have inserts and stuff... well, that adds more. I'd take on to the post office and have it weighed so you know for sure.

If nothing else, the $0.44 stamps can be used on the RSVP cards.

On top of that, remember (lots of reading on other ladies' comments) that the same and thickness of the invitation increase rates.

For RSVP I would suggest letting them use the one on the website (save on stamps) or give them alternate methods -- call, email, etc.

Our invitations were big and heavy so we paid I think $0.81 each.

Mine was $1.04 plus the $.44 for the RSVP card. I had the invitation, the RSVP. a map and a card for the invite to the pre wedding barbecue. I wanted to use wedding stamps so I used the $.44 one with wedding rings and the $.61 with the wedding cake.

Take one of the invites that is ready to go and ask them to tell you the cost to mail. You do not want to mess up and have them come back.

The best thing to make sure is to stuff one with everything that will go with it, then take it to the post office & let them weigh it. If you don't have enough postage they will come back with "not enough postage" stamp is big red letters all over them (I know someone that it happened to). Not only that the price of postage is about to go up as well (I heard on Jan. 2nd, but don't quote me on it). I am sending mine out next week & I haven't bought them yet so I'm not sure on the price.

    Mine was $0.95

    1. because of the size... the were square & somewhat heavy

    2. because i didn't want our guests to receive their invite with any USPS barcodes or ink stamps, etc on them.

rsvp was the norm $0.44. our TY cards were $0.64... would've been the normal postage but again, i didn't want any barcodes on them.

Just to repeat good advice: take a complete invite to the post office and get it weighed, so you don't have any surprises. Lots of brides here have had unpleasant ones when they took a huge stack of fully stuffed invites to the post office.

You could also weigh it yourself on a kitchen scale, but that's only a good idea if it's a "machinable" piece. That means NO outside details (ribbon, etc.) and it has to have an aspect ratio (length divided by height) of 1.3 to 2.5, according to the USPS website (that's why square envelopes cost extra).

Second what Cabell , Marie and others said about taking a sample invite to the post office. I did and mine turned out to be 0.61 cents each, 0.44 plus an extra ounce at 0.17 per ounce.

If the weight of it is right on the border between one stamp and another, make sure you get them all done at the post office. I know it sounds silly, but I read somewhere (either here or in a wedding planner book) about someone weighing just one and it was x for the postage, so they put that amount on all of them and had some come back with insufficient postage. (perhaps a ribbon was a little longer or something silly like that) So if it's obviously going to be one set amount, I wouldn't worry about it, but if it's close, I'd play it safe and get them all weighed.

For my wedding invitation card, i got it for 0.68$. As MeGhan mentioned It's not about size, it's about weight and specially Indian wedding invitation is really heavy in weight.
