How much is too much for a place setting?

Chrissy, on June 30, 2013 at 10:38 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

I know I have some time and that patterns can change next spring, but FH and I have been discussing plates and are stuck. We're not doing fine china, so we want to get nicer everyday plates. I know lots of ladies do white, so they can dress it up or down, but i find white to be a bit boring. For all the colored patterns, I hate everything I'm finding. That is except for a couple Kate Spade patterns. Problem is that those are basically the same price as fine china... Over $100 a setting once we get everything we want.

Our families are basic middle class people. Some are more well off than others, but most should be able to afford a $50-100 shower gift. My mom never splurged on anything, so I'm having a really hard time with this. I keep thinking of what else we could get with that money. Thoughts? How much are your place settings?

The fine china we registered for is a little over $100 for each 5-piece place setting. All our people sound to be about the same as yours & I figure if they don't want to splurge they don't have to, or a couple people can go in on something together.

We are also going to add some everyday china and it's like $70 for the whole set :p We chose a chocolate brown color so that it's neutral but not boring like white would be Smiley smile

You have asked exactly what I have been thinking. I was going to create a thread about place settings too so I'm interested to see what others think.

FH and I were at BB&B the other night and we really liked these:

They come in various colors. I wish it came in gray, because that's the color I am looking to buy. You still get the sophisticated white but there is color on the outside. I agree with you on the white. It can be boring.

I also liked this for Fine China:

FH doesn't want to register for both fine china and everyday dining. We figured we would need about 10 place settings, which can be quite pricy so I think we are just going to go with nicer everyday dishes, like the Noritake ones.

Interested to see what everyone's thoughts on everyday vs formal place settings.

I like color and was actually considering just getting like 3 different of the colorwave colors, so it could be more fun. FH nixed that and the only thing we've agreed upon is Kate Spade (I should remind him of that come my birthday).

Part of me says its our wedding and its now or never to get nice plates, and that's what weddings are for. I know I'll never buy them myself. The other part of me thinks its absurd to ask for over $1200 in plates, even if we use them daily. My mom has my grandmother's fine china, which one day will be mine. Decisions, decisions.

Haha Chrissy I had the same conversation with FH. We printed a list off of BB&B that lists everything you should register for and we have NOTHING. We currently live with my parents until October / November and literally all we have is a bed, tv, and our clothes. Everything on the list was something that we will need. FH was like "We can't ask for all of that!" and my thinking is that you can only ask for these things on your wedding registry. You aren't going to ask for them for any other occasion so now is our chance. If I need it, I'm putting it on the registry.

Our everyday dishes are 96 a place setting. We asked for 10 and have received all but 1 (5 days out from wedding). I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting nice everyday dishes...after all, you'll use them everyday!

I don't think the price will shock people these days. If you register for each type of item separately, people can pick and choose and spend only what they can.

You can always get them after the wedding..a lot of places after your date will let you have a certain percentage off on registry items..I guess it depends were you are registered at though. The most expensive thing on my registry was a 70 dollar vacuum cleaner. As a guest I may raise my eyebrows a bit, but not judge you for having the place settings on the registry..However I would just purchase something else off the registry..as long as you have ranges of price points on there, then it is fine.

I think if those are the ones you really want, then register for them. Plenty of people will spend in the $100 range on a gift, and if they don't want to - then they can shoose something else.

I actually prefer white since I get tired of colours after a short time and want o change them up (but don't want to do this with dinnerware.) We registered for: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.ca/product.asp?sku=108681&

which was ~$50/place setting but $179 for a set of 4 place settings. We got both sets gifted already by my favourite uncle/aunt, but FMIL convinced me to register for another set so I have 12.

Speaking of doing each item separately, I though about doing this since I will need 10 plates, 10 small plates, and 10 bowls but I don't think I will need 10 mugs. However it is more expensive to register for each piece separately. Are you guys just registering for whole sets or has anyone registered for separate pieces?

@Chrissy The one thing I considered on registering for something more expensive that you need multiples of (like place settings) is if you're willing to buy what you don't receive. If you want service for 10 and you get 5, will you buy the other 5?

@Lindsay I saw a registry suggestion that you could register for the pieces separately (to give people a lower price point) and then exchange them and buy the full place settings, which are typically cheaper. You may be more likely to get more place settings that way. I think the recommendations was actually for pots and pans, but I thought it was a good idea.

I'm having a hard time finding anything I like as well, I have a hard time with the idea of spending more than $20 a place setting but I like basic corelle dishes since they last forever. I wouldn't spend $100 per place setting unless it was fine china and even then, I think my family wouldn't spend that much and I'd end up with not all my settings and not being able to afford the rest.
