How much does it cost to get a ring sized?

Lisa Marie, on January 17, 2012 at 9:33 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19

I'm thinking that my ring might need to be sized. I didn't notice anything when we first got engaged, but now that it is cold out my ring spins around a lot and is pretty loose. It's not to the point that I'm afraid of it falling off, but it spins around when I'm typing at work and such and it annoys me. Does anyone know how much it costs to get a ring sized? FH bought the ring at Kay's - would it be best to go to Kay's to have it sized or to go elsewhere?

But are you sure you want it sized? Perhaps add those little prongs - I'm blanking out on what they're called - because it may be too tight in summer?

Mrs. S - That's what I'm not sure about. I was gonna talk to the store about it and see what they have to say cause I definitely don't want to have to resize it again in the summer. Does the jewelry store add the prongs?

I can't remember now, it's awful. But there was a post just the other day where ladies had pictures of that - it almost seemed like something you can just put on and take off. I know Kris posted a picture there, maybe she sees this too.

Yeah I remember seeing the picture too - I'm not sure how comfortable that looked though...kinda seemed like they would dig into your finger?

Be careful, cause my ring slides when its cold because my fingers shrink in the cold.. but during the summer I need the bigger size. Like in the winter, im a size 4 and in the summer I am a 4.5 so I just deal with it in the winter, or put a plastic sizer (from walmart) on.

I think the jeweler usually does it for free. Mine was doing the same thing and so I went down half a size. Now it's perfect in every weather. People kept telling me not to do it because it would end up too tight but I hated it moving all around so I'm glad I followed my own gut and got it sized!

I know what you mean, but nobody complained? Just a thought until one of those ladies wakes up :-)

I called my jeweler and they said they only resized for free during the first month. Now it's $35 and they ship it. I believe Kays said $30 and Zales said $40. Those prices include the rhodium dip. It's been a month or two since I asked, so those prices are rough. I really need to get my ring and the one I wear of my left hand done. I'm worried about having to have the wedding bands resized, too. It's been a long time coming. My rings we loose this summer in the record-breaking heat. Now they are almost falling off and almost always backwards from the sliding around.

Also, the little ball thing was $20 or $30. I know Kays said they'd do that right away in the store in very little time.

I just had my ring resized through Kays and it cost 20 bucks; after cutting me a deal. Be prepared to be without your ring for ten days to two weeks...I was without mine for two weeks and it was torture Smiley sad

If your FH purchased it from Kay's it should be free. My FH purchased mine from Kay's and I had to get mine sized and it was free.

Mine was free and done in a day. The temporary fix is called a ring guard. You can get one from Walmart but they break easily. Kay's and Zales sell them in white gold for about $30. That might be your best bet if you think your fingers will expand in the summer. Either way let the jeweler size you and make your decisions from there Smiley smile

It depends, my FH got the lifetime care plan with my ring so that covers it getting resized or redipped as many times as I need it

I just went through the same thing...had to size up 1/2 size after we moved to a more humid/warm climate, but now in the winter it spins a bit.

The cost of repair/sizing will probably depend on the warranty that came with the ring. My warranty covers sizing/inspection/rhodium plating 2x a year (white gold) for free. The Jared near us will size jewelry not under warranty for around $50. If you have a warranty with Kay but you get it sized elsewhere, check the warranty first b/c that could void it.

I'll probably have these added....the jeweler said they're called "bishop's beads"...?? The beads are supposed to help stabilize the ring, balance out the weight and keep it from sliding around without making it too tight all over. My jeweler adds them for around $100.
