How much does catering cost?

Lauren, on January 22, 2018 at 10:44 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 41
For a typical budget, how much does it cost on average to cater - per person? Trying to get an idea of what is reasonable. Thank you to everyone who comments!

This varies widely on location, venue, and type of menu. For my original wedding plans we were at $230 pp. I ended up having my wedding at a restaurant and our pp cost was $95.

There are too many variables to even answer this. We are in an urban area and found everything from $40 - $150 a person. It depends on location, meal options and a zillion other things .

There may be a lot of variables, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t an average cost a couple spends on catering per person ☺️ Thanks.

Actual catering is between $15-30/pp; venues that do their own catering have significant markup closer to $90-200/pp. Tange in prices is based on location.

Even in one location this will vary. I looked all around Boston and surrounding areas, along with NH. Came across places as low as $50pp and as high as $250pp. Also, when looking around and comparing, one thing I did notice is that when you take all costs into considerations, venue rental, food, drinks, that's when things even out a bit and you start seeing that the total cost is around the same. Don't just look at the food cost, look at the entire package.

Agreed! I’m strongly considering a venue that charges $114 per person plus a base price (around 6k) but that includes dinner, all rentals, flowers, dj, bartender, cake or dessert, etc. I would just have to find a photographer and HMUA (and provide alcohol). It’s actually looking to be cheaper than $60 catering.

We had our reception at the Fairmont in Sonoma. It ended up being about $315 per person. That was definitely on the higher end. The average of the places we looked in Napa/Sonoma were $150-200 per person.

The average that you will find is by total wedding cost. Around 30k for 150 guests is a number I see around a lot. Then again, that is the county's average and by no means a perfect average.

If you are looking for your area specifically, check costofwedding.com. That will give you your area average. Inclusive venues are going to appear more expensive than just catering as others mentioned. Does catering include alcholol? Cake? Dessert table? Linens? Dishes? BBQ? Italian? Filet mignon? Seafood? Cocktail hour? DOC? Centerpieces?

We had an inclusive venue for $85 per person. It included all that. Our buffet was so stocked that we never ran out of food. The venue was actually giving take out containers for the dessert table. Our venue included all that I questioned. A friend who is getting married over the summer is at $110 per person just for food and alcholol.

Mine is $10 per person and family style serving. We opted for BBQ because we are doing a rustic country wedding.

My catering comes out to $80-90/person, but that includes a plated meal, cocktail hour appetizers, and a coffee bar. Our food is more of an upscale menu but still traditional in that we have beef, chicken, and fish (having 3 entres also raises the cost a bit).

Mine is about $72 per person, including a plated meal, 2 cocktail hour appetizers (considering adding a 3rd), and an open bar for 4 hours. Just the food and labor is about $45 per person.
