How much does a DJ cost

Kerri, on January 7, 2010 at 8:34 AM Posted in Planning 0 44

I have friends that are twin brothers and they DJ and I've asked them to DJ our wedding but I"m not sure what is the right amount to offer them to do it. One thing I do need to keep in mind is that our wedding is on a Friday so they may either have to take the einter day off or at least part of the day so I need to make sure it's worth their time.

Couples tend to spend about 8% of their total wedding budget on music (ceremony and reception), and the average amount that engaged couples spent on their DJ in 2016 was $1,200.

Hmmm thats tough to say, have you asked them what they feel is appropriate? If not, I would sit down with them and talk about it, let them know your budget, see what they usually charge other cpls and take it from there Smiley smile Good Luck!

I was thinking that $1200 would be fair cause then the wouodl each get $600, but I'm not sure if that's to much or not enough since everything is more expensive in CA.

    $1200 is really high. I think $800 - $900 is reasonable.

Ours is normally $800 for 5 hours but since we are going through our venue we get $100 off so it is only $700. I know most DJ's are $800-900 though.

I'm paying about $650 for 6.5 hours (I got $200 off since my wedding is on a friday), but the 6.5 hours does not include set up and tear down as I am not being charged for that, but it does include lights, fog machine, and bubble machine.

    I DJ for free...

The music is extra, the speakers are extra... OK, sorry, I was being facetious.

The fee you pay a DJ is based on MANY factors. What sort of equipment do they have? How long have they been doing this, and are they professional? What do you want for music, and how big of a room do you have to fill up with sound? Do you want any special lighting along with the music? There are many more pertinent questions...

You're going to find DJ's who will perform for as little as $300 or as much at $5000, with all kinds of qualities and skills in between. Check out the "Vendors" tab at the top of this page for details on who, what, where etc of DJ's.

The "normal" fee for an average run of the mill pro DJ is about $700, with very few lights (or none) with a basic sound system. Adjust your fee to fit the other qualities you desire.

Here's a quote I like: "The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of a cheap price is forgotten."

Sorry I guess Louisville KY is just a cheaper place to live bc I am only paying $235 for four hours. I say move to Louisville. Lol But Devine I would think $1300 is way overpriced and I am sure you can find someone just as good for under a thousand.

We are paying $1,000 for 6 hours. But $200 of that is for uplighting. So technically for $800 we get 2 d.j's (it's a husband and wife team), dance floor lighting, and unlimited access to their online planner. That also includes the set-up and tear down and travel expense because they are like 2 hours from me.

You could always ask them how much they think is reasonable like someone else said. I do think $1200 is a little much. We got a really good deal for 6 hours since it is an old family friend. Devine - as for $1300, you can find cheaper ones. Where in NJ?

Most of the pricing is going to depend on where you live and what the economy is like in that area.

Kerri, there are many variables in your situation. Are the friends you are using pro dj's? Also are they wedding DJ's? A club or bar DJ is a very different skill set than a wedding DJ. You need to make sure they can handle the formalities, coordinate a timeline with your other vendors, and keep the reception running smoothly long before the open dancing even starts. If they are working DJ's and you are comfortable with their skills, just find out what they normally charge regular clients, and base your offer on that.

As far as the $1300 rate, no question you can find cheaper. You have to judge how important entertainment is to your reception, meet with DJ's across price ranges and find which one you feel most comfortable with at a price you can afford. Just be sure whoever you hire has the skills to provide the services you want to make your wedding the day you want it to be.

Depending on the amount of lighting and the equpiment being provided the prices can go eaither way... for 4hrs with lights and sound we would charge around $700 and could work with a budget

I'm in NJ and we are paying $1200 for our DJ for the ceremony and reception. NJ tends to be expensive.
