How much do you tip for wedding hair and makeup?

Megan, on November 24, 2009 at 12:40 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

I'm having two hair dressers and one makeup artist come to my house the morning of my wedding to work on four bridesmaids, myself and possibly my mother. How much are you supposed to tip them and would you just add that to the check or pay in cash?

The rule is 15-25%. I usually do 20%. And they prefer cash usually. But you can always add it to the check too.

Ditto Potters. I figured out the percentage (between 15-20%) and paid for the tips for my girls, since they paid to have their own hair done. I gave them their tip in cash in seperate envelopes.

I am always confused about this one. If they are coming to your house they are usually not working for a salon they are making side money. So do you still trip them even though they are pocketing all the money and not splitting it with the salon?

I think the money they charge is for the service they provide. You should tip them additional if you are pleased with the job they did. Even if they are doing it as 'side money'

If they do a good job, you tip them. How much depends on how good of a job and how much you have to spend. My mother is a hair dresser and she receives on average 15-20%, but slightly more from parents and adults during special occassions.

I have been to massage therapist and was always alluded by these tipping rules. But, after having been to several--some are good and some are definitely not good. A tip is more than just a number, it helps them know if they should do that job/type of work again. But, hopefully you get to pick someone you already know can do a good job ahead of time!! So, hopefully you can just plan on 20%.

Hello ladies Smiley smile i would love to say that when i previously worked for a company that provide hair and makeup on location i only got a percentage of the services i provided doing makeup..and i used my own product,.and drove to the venue sometimes 40 miles away... so i so appreciated the tips..and i also appreciated it when the bride or bridal party tipped me seperate from the hair person as to be honest its hard to know if your really getting what the bride had in mind..best to just tip seperate.. and most of those companies expect cash only the day of the wedding..

now that i am off on my own.. it changes things a little..i still travel to my brides use my product and do the artistry..but the entire amout goes to me..but if the bride or members of the party of pleased with my services a tip is always so appreciated! i use it to help pay for my babysitter expenses. there have been times i have gond above and beyond for brides and girls and didnt get tipped and was dissapointed.

20% is normal in the LA metro area - 25% if they go above and beyond, they really appreciate cash if possible.

Here in the MD/DC/VA area for a party of 6 i normally end up with around 125-150 in tips.

I hope you dont mind my suggestions..this is just from working so many weddings and what i have seen with my own eyes on an ongoing basis..i think anyone you truly feel went above and beyond you could tip and they would be grateful..but i know the makeup artist/hair stylist/limo driver,,if you have one..and your photographer is smart move....other than that its up to..i think you just have to go with your heart sometimes...

This is hard for me because I am already straining my budget to pay for everyone to get their hair and makeup done, and I feel like $800 for 7 people is expensive enough without a 20% tip, (this is an independently run business). What I'll probably end up doing, is tipping 15% for the service and be done with it but that doesn't mean I'm happy about giving the tip. It's really about giving someone money for an extra person without getting an extra person.

    Ugh tips can be frustrating...

Makeup artists pay for our own supplies and travel. We also have a specialized skill you are paying for or else you would do the service yourself. Price usually depends on the artists level of experience, quality of supplies and reputation. Tips are the right thing to do for any service employee. If you can't afford to tip, then you shouldn't expect an artist to take the time to come to you to perform. Do the makeup and hair yourself....people who don't tip are frustrating and 20% is what is we usually get but 15-25% is the norm. If you think tipping is frustrating then perhaps find a friend or family member to help you, but hey, I'm the kind of person who is happy to tip them too, you know, because I understand not tipping is a dick move.

I would be embarrassed to NOT tip. I could never do that to someone.
