How much champagne for mimosas

Alina, on July 20, 2012 at 12:44 PM Posted in Planning 0 12

We were originally having wine on the tables at the reception as our only alcohol. We don't have the budget nor the desire to have a full bar.

However, I decided that I wanted something during appy hour and so I decided on mimosas. We have these big drink dispensers, so we can make them up and be self-served.

My question is, for a 110 guest wedding (about 15 are children), how much champagne do we need to have mimosas going for about an hour?

Any idea?

I would take a good look at the guests you have attending. I have some friends that could finish off a bottle themselves in an hour so it really depends.

Do you have any sense of how heavy/moderate/light drinkers your guests are?

General rule with champagne per bottle in a regular flute glass is 5 to 6.

Are most of your guest heavy drinkers? Is there anything else being passed or for the to snack on?

I'd say about half are heavy drinkers, half are light to moderate.

During appy hour, there will be heavy appetizers as well as lemonade, ice tea, and water. And then the mimosas.

Appy hour is 5:30-6:30 and Then dinner following. Dinner includes two large bottles of wine per 6-7 people.

Mimosas are more of a morning cocktail. Have you thought about a champagne split?

Also Mimosas are not the type of drink that can be made ahead of time. The champagne will go flat and you would have wasted a ton of money.

I've never heard of a champagne split, what's that? I'm not too worried about the time of day we're serving them. I love Mimosas at any time Smiley smile

We have staff to make them, so each dispenser would be made as it's consumed. They wouldn't really be made that far in advance.

Hi Alina! On average I would estimate about 2 drinks (Mimosas) per person for the cocktail hour. (increase to 3 if they are heavy drinkers) The amount of champagne you are going to need to provide is going to vary based on the size cups you are using. If you are using normal 6 oz. champagne flutes and mixing 50% champagne 50% OJ, you would need about 24 (25 oz) bottles of champagne for 2 mimosas per person for 95 adults. If you are using bigger cups, or using more champagne than OJ in the mimosas you'll need more bottles. Does that help give you an idea??

3 drinks in an hour? I must be an over the top drinker then. OOPS!

I love mimosas too. However, I don't think they will dispense well through a dispenser. It is more of a drink that is made individually. Also, you are an August wedding. It will be hot, so add another drink for thirst quenching. Or, have bottled water as your guests enter.

Are you set on mimosas? Have you considered a Malibu Bay Breeze or Sangria? Those easily translate into a dispenser and are refreshing.

Do you have a Total Wine store near you? If so, they have some lovely French champagnes moderately priced.

@Ashley F - Thanks, that helps, I'll consider all of that!

@Carole M - I have a dispenser here, so I'll try it tonight just to see how it works. I would really like mimosas, but if it doesn't work out, I can try something else Smiley smile Luckily, we're on the westcoast of Canada and the reception is in the early to late evening so it really shouldn't be that hot, BUT that also means we have no Total Wines and our alcohol is about three times the price of that in the States, which really sucks! (And why we're not providing a large amount of alcohol!)

I do like the idea of a sangria though or a Bay breeze. We just wanted to provide something light and refreshing during appy hour without adding a HUGE amount of cost to our budget.
