How much beer to buy for reception? Drink calculators don't help!

Spring, on April 18, 2012 at 3:00 PM Posted in Planning 0 4

Hi Ladies! A two-part question. Did we buy enough wine, and how much beer should we buy?

The variables:

-Sunday in May wedding. 160 guests. 12 adults in bridal party.

-a 3:30 p.m. reception start. We paid til 9 p.m. for the reception, but can add on in 1/2 hour increments

-Weddings guests are traveling, at a minimum, a 1/2 hour to be there.

-We have provided a shuttle to the hotel

We are serving:

-Wine (bought 8 mid-price range 5L boxes, each box is the equivalent of almost 7 bottles)

-Beer (1/2 barrel kegs, did not purchase yet)

-Two signature drinks (peach sangria and whiskey sours)

-Whiskey/peach schnapp mini shots for bridal dance

-Pop, water, plus a coffee bar

We have 130 people coming to our wedding, our bartender told us that we shouldn't do more than 2 half barrel kegs...she told us we could do we could get 3 half barrels but then we would end up wasting most of the 3rd keg....so in your position I would probably do 3 half barrels. FH and his friends are more beer drinkers, than liquor..so you have to take into consideration how many people would prefer beer.

Thank you both. We were told by the venue (that can hold up to 225) that previous wedding parties have purchased 3 half-barrels, but rarely is the 3rd one tapped.

It's a Sunday, so it's not like we can run out and buy more if we run out (no beer/liquor sales in PA past a certain time on Sundays)

We calculated that it was cheaper to buy bottles and cans than it was to buy a keg. Most of the keg gets wasted. Nobody wants to get there and pump the keg to get a beer out. It would be like college again. We have estimated about 4 drinks person. That should be more than enough! You also get to take the left overs home!! We are also only serving beer and wine. We have soda, juice, and water for non-booze.
