How much are y'all spending on catering?

Just curious how much I should estimate for catering. I'm currently trying to decide between two venues. One offers in house catering and the other does not. Other than that, they're completely similar in what they offer. So my dilemma is that I'm trying to compare apples to apples by calculating...

So my dilemma is that I'm trying to compare apples to apples by calculating catering into the price, but I'm not sure how much people are spending in the Houston area on catering?

Anyone mind letting me know how much you budgeted? I'm only having about 80 people or so. Thanks in advance!! Smiley smile

My reception is at a restaurant but I'm budgeting for about $3k for 30 people which puts me at about $100 pp give or take. It will include appetizers, entrees, alcohol options, and a few dessert options if a guest would prefer something other than wedding cake. It should also cover gratuity but we do have plenty of room left in the rest of the budget if not. The $3k doesn't budget for cake, though. I have a separate budget for it.

Mine was $175 p.p., 4 years ago, in a state without sales tax, with a $50 p.p. discount, for a Sunday night. It was held at a full-service, 5-star hotel, with fabulous food and service. There were: 4 plated courses, 5 hours top shelf open bar, valet parking, wine service, a huge cold food buffet/stations and thousands of passed hot hors d'oeuvres for the cocktail hour, the cake, a dessert bar, etc.

It's impossible to compare. Our venue was over 40% of our budget. Guest entertainment was over 10%.

For me the best way to address that was to find a venue that provides the food as well as the cake that way I saved some money.

I don't know specific price yet since it is too early to know, but our venue requires us to spend a minimum of $7,500 for food and bar. We are going to have several appetizers during cocktail hour and for dinner it is plated with a salad, main course, dessert (plus the wedding cake), and rolls. We have budgeted about $10,000 for catering (including bar). This is for around 120 people in South Carolina

I am having my wedding on the lawn of my parents' house. For an hour of passed apps and multiples stations including beef and pork tenderloin it will be $42 a person. That includes 20% gratuity, cutlery, plates, water, tea, ad coffee. I am supplying the bar myself.

I am planning long distance from Houston and have found everything to be double here versus my hometown FYI. My FI's brother had a less than 100 person wedding that was $50k and they thought that was cheap.

Whatever you go with, make certain you understand pricing. Are tips included? If they say service charge, don't be shy, ASK does that mean no tips? For anyone? Barkeeps, wait staff? ASK how does liquor work? Do you get any leftover bottles? Is there a minumum?

I hate this question because every region and every wedding is so different. Even the way that caterers and venues do their pricing differently.

Totally get what you're saying. Just trying to see what the average is that people are paying so I can kind of have a ballpark figure while trying to decide whether we'll pick the all inclusive venue or the other one!!

Thanks @amanda C. We are in Texas too and that's sort of what I was thinking average lower-end catering would be!

I'm not getting married in the Houston area, but I am getting married in Texas. Our caterer is charging us 13.75 per plate, tea and lemonade is included. Our venue is pretty flexible so we're bringing in our own alcohol and we're spending about 1500 in alcohol plus a total of $2300ish on catering which includes service. (I'll the exact price once I get my rsvps back). So food and alcohol will take up about a third of my budget.
