How much am I supposed to tip the baker in this situation...?

Raven, on December 12, 2016 at 2:43 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 31

How much tip is appropriate if the total bill is $928.90? The bakery is owned and operated by a mother & daughter duo. They are the only two employees, and they will both be delivering and doing the initial setup of the cake, cupcakes, and cookies then will leave. Our caterer will be replenishing the cupcake stand and cookies for them as needed.

Please no rude comments. I've never had to tip on an amount this high before, so I need help. The wedding is not until May 6th, but I'm trying to verify I have enough budgeted for tips too. Thanks!

    I think for setup, 75-100.

And you can't tell people how to answer you.....

Oh no, not for just one cake! Smiley smile The cost is for a one of a kind Harry Potter grooms cake with a lot of details, Brides specialty Jane Austen inspired vintage looking cupcakes with vintage lace wrappers (11 dozen), 4 dozen cookies, cupcake stand, grooms cake stand, etc.

Wow I bet that cake is going to be outstanding. I'd say $100 would be appropriate.

Bride, Groom, and Bakers all brainstormed and pulled ideas from some of these Pinterest pics. Ours will not be identical. I can't wait to see how it turns out. We have sketches of the grooms cake, just don't have them scanned to computer.

Technically on 15% you're looking at 150- I would do no less than 100$. More if you can and are willing to do so and you feel it's warranted.

Wait I'm confused. I thought you only had to tip people if they didn't own the business. I would've thought that since they own the business and are doing the delivery/setup themselves, they wouldn't get the usual 15 percent, just like a $50 thank you. Is that wrong?

Does the same thing apply to photography, videography, planners, etc.? I just assumed since they owned their own businesses, they didn't get the whole 15-25% standard tip the photographer's assistant, waiter, etc. would get. (sorry don't mean to hijack the thread)

I thought the same as Carrie. I wasn't planning on tipping my baker since she is the owner but I would not want to be rude! https://www.theknot.com/content/wedding-vendor-tipping-cheat-sheet

I don't plan on tipping vendors that own their own company. They set their prices. There are exceptions like if they go above and beyond their duties like staying later for some reason but for the most part, I plan on tipping my servers, bartenders, and the cleaning team from the venue

We're planning on 10% for our baker because ours is very basic and doesn't take a lot of setup, but she's still transporting a cake. If you've ever done that, it's a logistical and driving nightmare, so I want to give a thank you for getting our beautiful cake there in one piece! With all you're asking, I'd definitely tip closer to 15%.

I would give each of the people delivering it $10, if they were not owners. If owners, nothinmg
