How many photos did your photographer retouch?

Krystal, on October 28, 2021 at 1:30 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19
Hi! We got our photos back before a week but because they weren’t retouched. I reached out asking if there was a certain number we can pick out to be retouched.
How many did your photographer do for you and what kind of retouching did he or she do?

For our engagement photos, our photographer edited every single photo she gave us (a little over 100 pics). Our wedding photographer also edits all photos.

We just got our engagement photos back (253 photos) and they were all edited (to my knowledge at least)!

    Check your contract

Mine provided 6 preview photos within 48 hours that had been retouched. Anything additional he charged for, it was not pricy. His photography was so good that any retouching was more for vanity than anything else

Mine provided me with almost 3k photos. He just told me he’s going to retouch 50 for free

I probably had 200-or-so photos and I believe they were all edited.

Or would anyone recommend hiring someone to edit additional photos?

I've never heard of a photographer giving someone unedited photos. I've had engagement, wedding, maternity and newborn photos all professionally by two different companies and both companies provided photos that were properly edited.

Before doing this, I would check with your photographer. Usually editing by an outside party is prohibited in the contract.

Did they do like face retouching, background item removal, or things like smoothing out a dress? (My moms dress was messed up in all the photos where there’s a random roll…) or is it more like fixing the lighting?

Yeah we went with this photographer because he had really good sample albums! Happy with his photos, his main selling point was that if you take good photos they don’t need to be edited. I would just prefer some retouching

I think it's more like fixing lighting rather than heavy editing like removing objects or anything like that.

Ohh in that case then it is probably for vanity reasons as well. His photos don’t need to be retouched at all for lighting

Okay then I'm not sure what you are wanting him to edit. Fixing your mom's dress isn't something I would really see any photographer doing with all of the photos as that would be extremely time consuming. I also don't think they'd remove objects. I don't even know what kind of objects you'd actually want removed from your wedding photos.

Depending on the photos chosen, he mentioned he would remove some signs from the golf course. Also really wanted him to take our officiant out of our kiss photo!

That sounds like rather extensive editing so I can understand why he's wanting to charge you more to do it.

That's not retouching, that's actual editing that takes quite a bit of time which is understandable why he doesn't do it for everything and charges for it.

Ah, I see now that you want more extensive editing. That would be more money for most photographers, I imagine, and I doubt they would consent to other people editing their work.

What you're describing is not retouching, it's heavy editing, and usually costs extra.
