How many of each type of wine?

Lysandra, on June 19, 2017 at 7:42 AM Posted in Planning 8 17

I've been stressing out trying to figure out how much of everything I should get. I'm expecting around 200 guests. I'm thinking for wine I'd like to have Moscato, chardonnay, rose, and cabernet sauvignon. We don't have a ton of wine drinkers and the people who do drink wine don't drink a ton of red. I'm thinking probably 9 cases of wine so that would be 108 bottles. Is that not enough? How many of each would you suggest? I'm also having beer and 3 signature cocktails.

Following because I'm still trying to decide how much beer and wine I'll need for my 200 guests.

That's 400 glasses of wine for 200 guest so that's 72 bottles of wine or 6 cases. Beer 1000 12 oz cans but not all of your guest will drink beer and not all guest will drink wine so you may want to make some adjustments. Sorry I use to be a catering manager I hope this helps you.

    I'm using this calculator: https://www.evite.com/pages/party/drink-calculator

I just adjusted based on our guests. I'm getting a little less wine because I think most will drink the sangria, beer, or signature drink. So I decreased wine and increased the others.

We're doing two reds (blend and cab sauv) and two whites (pinot grigio and chardonnay). I didn't do a sweeter option due to the sangria.

Are you asking in advance what entrée guests want. People can drink what they want, but most people drink red with meat and white with fish or poultry.

I have anxiety about this. For 150 guests, I am getting 4 cases of red wine and 4 cases of white, and 2 kegs. We aren't allowed to have hard alcohol at our venue. Our bartender thinks that will definitely be enough, but I'll probably end up buying some cases of beer because I'm pretty sure the GM's alone could kill a keg if they really tried. Haha

Lol yeah I've had anxiety about this for a while. I bought 25 bottles of liquor for one of the signature drinks because I found them on sale and I thought it was plenty at the time but now I'm like "well what if everybody only likes this drink and we run out" or "what if the only wine everybody wants to drink is Moscato and I only bought 3 cases of it".

I would substitute one of the whites with a pinot grigio. I would also add a red - maybe merlot or pinot noir. Also - where are you buying your wine? Total wine will let you return unopened bottles so I would consider buying more than you think you'll need and returning what doesn't get used.

Okay I'm pretty firm on the Moscato just because that's what my family, close friends, and I like to drink. Do you think the pinot grigio should replace the chardonnay?

I calculated a drink per hour per person. Then I determined what ratio of beer to wine. We have a lot of beer drinkers so I decided on 40% beer and 60% wine. It's a summer wedding, which apparently generally increases white wine consumption. So the wine was split 50/50 between red and white. Generally I would have had less white wine. And I accounted for the fact that one wine bottle = 4 glasses. It CAN do 5 glasses but I wanted to account for a heavy pour.

We are having a cabernet sauvignon and a sauvignon blanc. We considered a chardonnay, but it tends to be a bit rich and heavy for a drink all night type of wine.

We bought from Costco so that we could return unopened bottles.

Figuring that out stressed me out so much.

OP FYI---check your states laws about returning unopened alcohol...in GA you cant. (or at least you def cant to Costco/Sams...)

To figure out numbers....account for 2 drinks the first hour, and 1 for each additional hour for every guest. I added two extra drinks per person just to be safe. and glad I did because apparently my crowd drank like fish. As far as types and how much wine vs beer and liquor...that's a know your crowd thing.

Ooh, I would skip the rose in favor of a Pinot noir or merlot.

ETA: in all honesty, most people don't want a moscato as it is too sweet but if your family drinks it, I get that.

We are doing 8 cases for 120 adults plus open bar. If your crowd doesn't drink a lot then you may be okay. I would rather have too much than not enough though. Maybe find a place that will allow you to return it after.

I agree I'd rather have a nice merlot than a rose. Skip moscato.

So should I leave the cabernet sauvignon or switch that? My problem with getting two red wines is that I know most of my guests prefer white. Unless I do 2 reds and just buy less bottles than the white.

I'm expecting about 150 guests and doing a modified open bar. I'm doing a "red or white" option (merlot and sauvignon blanc), two kegs (dark and light beer) and limited types of liquor (whiskey, gin, and vodka). We are buying 48 bottles of red and 48 of white. It's a December wedding and in the evening, so I'm concerned more people will drink red than white, but I don't have any firm evidence to back up that notion. Any thoughts?

Its normal to assume a 50/50 split between red and white.

Hotter weather usually leads to more white. So I'd assume more people will drink red in the winter. Especially if red pairs better with your meal.

We bought extra red, because that's what I enjoy. So having some extra just meant I didn't have to buy any wine for a while.

Some places will let you return unused bottles of wine, so see if that's an option and then you don't have to worry about overbuying. But you know what else? I've been at weddings where they ran out of my drink choice #1 towards the end. I still had fun. I still danced. I did not go thirsty. The sun rose the next day! Your day will be magnificent no matter what.
