How many cupcakes

Teresa, on May 15, 2018 at 10:10 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 15
Hello! I'm not sure if this is the correct category but how many cupcakes should we have? We are having a small cake for cutting which per my baker feeds 40 people. Originally we were having the cake, cupcakes and donuts. With 127 guests my baker suggested 4 dozen cupcakes and the cake (along with donuts). We have decided to cut the donuts from our plan and just do cake and cupcakes. My cake lady suggested 8 dozen that gives enough for people to have either cake or cupcake but not both. I personally think we should have 10 dozen then if there are a lot left over people can take them home. Am I just over estimating?

I would think 1 cupcake per person that won't have a slice of cake? Then maybe 10 extra? So maybe 90-100 cupcakes? We are doing mini cupcakes and mini desserts because it was cheaper! And then people can choose multiple desserts.

    Hi Teresa,

All of the options you presented make sense. a 40 person cake and 6-8 dozen cupcakes would be 'Just enough'

However, a 40 person cake and 10 dozen cupcakes would leave some wiggle room for leftovers for guests to take or even... you and your FS to save/share for after the wedding!

Totally depends on your budget and your baker's capabilities.

What flavor are the cupcakes going to be?? Will they match the cake? Here some other trends for wedding desserts in case you wanted another option!

    Good Luck!

I agree with you ordering more is better. I'd do 11 dozen cupcakes, enough for everyone to have a cupcake with a few extra. I would rather everyone be able to have one and there be leftovers instead of ordering too few and potentially running out. Perhaps don't serve the cake to guests just do the cutting photo and then have it boxed up in the back to take home with you.

It all depends. If there are other desserts for them to eat then 1.25 cupcakes per person (159 cupcakes). If there isn't then it would be 1.5 cupcakes per person.

I would probably have enough so each guest can have a slice of cake or a cupcake plus maybe 10 more to give a little wiggle room. I wouldn't purchase so many that people could actually take some home (unless you have room in your budget for that).

We are just doing the cake and cupcakes now. So 1.5 per person?

We do have room in the budget to do 8 doz and 10 doz. She charges $20 per dozen and the reason we cut the donuts was logistical not budget.

Ha mine would say the same thing to me! Smiley smile We host a lot of gatherings at our house and I always like to make more than we need, just in case. I always just tell him would you prefer we spend the extra $X and be safe or take the chance and be embarrassed if there's not enough for everyone. He always ends up agreeing to get more. Good luck! I hope you can convince him.

We estimated an average of 3 pp. We are having four flavors. So some guests might want all four. Some guests might not have any. Since you're having cake maybe account for 2 cupcakes per person? What's the worse part at the end if you have more? You get to take some home! Yum!

I had a small cake for cutting and cupcakes at my wedding. No one ate the cake. Most of the cupcakes were eaten. Our bakery recommended 1.5 cupcakes per person. I think it depends on if you have different flavors of cupcakes (we had 4, people tried different flavors) and the size of the cupcakes.

I agree with extra, 10-11 dozen seems about right. better to have too many than just enough. What if someone drops theirs and grabs another. or someone just helps themselves to 2.

Ok I am going to let FH read this and let him see I'm not alone in my thinking. Now to decide on flavors! 😂

We had take home cupcake boxes next to our display. They were a big hit. Everyone took a few home (we had 5 flavors to choose from). So I say the more the better ! 🙂
