How many bartenders?

Natasha, on September 26, 2015 at 9:52 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 17

How many bartenders did you have and how many guests? We expect 80 guests and our caterer listed only 1 bartender. That seems low to me but is that normal? We will be serving beer, wine, sodas/etc., and margaritas so it's not like the bartender will be busy with making special drinks but I just don't want there to be a bottleneck.

I am having roughly the same amount of people and I was told one bartender would be fine.

Actually that seems about right. I've been looking at pricing and most vendors say 1 bartender per 100 people.

ETA: Saw what you are serving. Should be fine.

We had two for about 120 people, though I've seen estimates that we should've had 3 or 4. We did beer in bottles so the bartenders just had to take the caps off and hand over. Plus we had a cute drink tub full of cold bottles of water so people could grab and go. We had a variety of liquor for mixed drinks but nothing super complicated so we never had a line at the bar aside from the first 10 minutes when everyone was let inside for the reception. And we had a loooot of drinkers in our crowd too so it wasn't that people weren't making repeated trips to the bar.

I've been to weddings with over 100 people with just one bartender. At times there were short lines, but never anything unreasonable. I think you will be fine.

Our venue did 1 per 100 ppl. We were planning on having 2 anyway though, because our venue was long and narrow. That way we had a bar on each end and no one had to cross the dance floor in the middle to get a drink.

Thanks for the replies! You made me feel at ease. We will stick with one bartender then.

I had the same amount of guest with 2 bartenders because I also had a milkshake bar as part of my package. 1 per 100 guest sounds about right. I didn't let my bartender serve soda to keep the lines short. Beverages like soda, lemonade, tea, and water was taken care of as by the catering crew.

Unfortunately, we tried to get our guest list under 225 but are unable to do so. With a crowd that size, our venue suggested 3. We've decided to have 4.

Our venue does 1 bartender per 50 people. But I think 1 for 80 seems fine. Not everyone will be drinking and not everyone will be getting a drink at the same time.

One should be enough for most of the evening, but you might want to start with a table or trays of pre-poured wine and and sparkling water, which will eliminate the crush at the beginning. That's a good idea for any size crowd, and it really helps the flow. Most of our venues do that.

We had 2 for 95 guests. Our venue recommended 1per 50 guests, to avoid lines.

I checked with my sister and she had 6 for 225. The venue would supply 1 per 50 guests, but again, they wanted to avoid lines, so paid extra, for 2 more. For the beginning of her cocktail hour, 2 of the bartenders had trays of white and red wine, to hand out, as guests were entering the C/H room.

Yes I was thinking starting with trays of drinks during cocktail hour would probably help. Thanks for the advice all!

I like the idea of pre-poured sparkling water, Celia! Our special cocktail for cocktail hour will be a margarita so figured we would have trays with those by considering they are sweet, I think sparkling water would be greatly appreciated as well.

Our venue is giving us 2 of them for our about 120 guests, but the wedding coordinator originally said we were only getting one.

Hey Smiley smile I'm an event bartender and I think 1 will be fine considering your bar menu. There will probably be a little bit of a line at first but guests tend to mingle and sign guest book etc. Our wedding is about 85 ppl and we're having one bartender. Happy wedding! ♡

We have already discussed this with our venue/caterer. We currently have about 140 on the guest list and they said one would be okay, but they recommended 2. I absolutely agreed with them. Personally, I think two bartenders would be a good idea for about 100 guests. We've been to several weddings where there were about 100 guests and everything moved way too slowly. If it had happened one time, then I would have chalked it up to that particular wedding; however, it seems to happen every time we go to a wedding with that many people and only one bartender.
