How many appetizers per person would be appropriate?

Jamie, on May 5, 2017 at 7:50 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

Our venue offers a better variety of tray served apps over the station served apps, but we have to order them by the dozen. We decided on 4 different apps, two varieties of bruschetta and two veggie apps (a hummus and a cream cheese app each served in a cucumber cup) these are to be served during our cocktail hour between the ceremony and dinner, so we don't want them to get full. We are expecting 60, and have to order a minimum of 4 dozen of each app. Should we just order enough for everyone to have one of each? Or order a little over?

I think one appetizer would be hard to do, especially during a cocktail hour where I assume people will be drinking. I don't want people to be wasted before dinner time, so I'm offering more like 6-7 pieces per person, because I'd rather have leftovers versus not enough.

Your caterer should know this better. When we did our menu we said what we wanted and ours just said what we needed for the amount of people. You shouldn't have to do the math.

I honestly don't think these are particularly appetizing choices, no pun intended. You don't need two kinds of bruscetta, and format wise, doing two of those and two cucumber cups stuffed with different past type things?

    No.

You need at least 6-10 pcs total per person and they need to be things people will actually eat. I could be making an assumption here, but it sounds like you want cold hors, which wouldn't be my fave choice for a late autumn wedding. These all sound very summery.

    Can you do hot ones?

I think 8-10 pieces total per person and agree with Celia...I'd add variety and a hot app.

    Order a lot over.

We went to a wedding that only offered 3 passed hors d'oeuvres, for their cocktail hour food - or so we heard. We were only offered one of them. Our guess was that they only prepared one per guest, and the first ones offered the trays took two each, of the ones we never saw.

We were offered pork sliders, which I don't like, but I ate one anyway. My sister couldn't eat it, and after drinking a glass of wine, felt half sick.

Thank you all for your input. We were going with the veggie options because of budget, the bruschetta aren't just tomatoes and cheese or whatnot, they have chicken cacciatore bruschetta and sliced beef with caramelized onions as well as caprese bruschetta. They do offer meatballs, which we decided against because they were double the price and we are trying to stick to a budget. We may be modifying our dinner menu though, which would free up some of the budget to offer more apps. They also have a stuffed mushroom app that we have been discussing. I just appreciate having this community to get feedback from.

My caterer offers 5 appetizers pp. After some research it's not going to be an abundance of food, but people will be fed.

I agree your appetizer options don't sound that great. But you absolutely need more than one per person. Most people will eat more than one and you will run out right away. Talk to your caterer about what they recommend

I don't see the issue with the app choices, especially since more dinner is to come. I agree that more than one per person is best. I can think of two weddings I've attended where the servers practically hid in order to get apps to the grandparents, who were seated, because there weren't enough to go around so people (myself included) were like vultures.

Our caterer is offering 3 varieties of appetizers, but enough for each guest to have 2. So 6 apps total per person?
