How long should I wait to get the guys fitted for tuxes?

Ruby, on February 13, 2014 at 1:56 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 20

I'm getting married this September and just wanted some suggestions on how long to wait to shop for tunes? I'm not sure of the process and how long it will take when we find a style to go with. Should I also go to this with the guys or is it just a guy thing?

Following this because I'm wondering the same thing.

As for you going with/being a guy thing, my FH and I decided that I would go with to help choose, mostly because I know what my dress and the bridesmaid dresses look like which helps making sure everything coordinates. But I do know that some grooms prefer to do it on their own and have their bride surprised on the wedding day... I think that's completely up to you guys!

I'm not sure. It probably varies place to place. My FH wants to go with a local business for his suit, but he might buy one.

Your guy (or you.. whoever) should talk to the places he's planning to go to. If you plan to buy a custom suit/tux it will take longer than simply renting one. I think a couple months is enough time for a basic rental.

If you plan to use a place like Mens Wearhouse, they probably have some guidelines on the website that could help.

    We're date twins! Smiley smile

I plan on choosing them soon. I want to start looking at options and swatches.

My husband is wearing his dress blues (they're actually black!), and so are two of his groomsmen. So, we have to match the black tux jackets to them, then match the vest/ties to our color scheme.

We're using Mens Wearhouse & when you set up your party with them, you give the names of the groomsmen & they put in all the details. Then, it's just up to the groomsmen to go & get fitted. We're stationed in Norfolk, Va & our wedding is in Chicagoland, so our bridal party is all spread out. I figure, the more time we give the guys the better. Especially, since boys are notorious for waiting until the last minute.

You can make your event anytime and it'll save until the week after your wedding. It's never too early to start looking for ideas/inspiration!

Pick them out at any time, to figure out style. Most places require fittings no later than 30 days.

We are getting the tuxes from Men's Warehouse and are getting married in September. I would say start as early as possible. One of our groomsmen had a family emergency he knew about since a few months ago but didn't decide to tell us about the emergency or that he couldn't be in the wedding until we asked him to get fitted for the tux. Starting early ensures you'll have time to adjust your bridal party.

Hey girls! Our wedding is also September 20th!! My FH & I went together to match the vests but he picked everything out! We're using Tuxedo Junction & they told us the guys should be fitted by April at the latest (to allow time for them to come in because prom season starts then and they get super busy).

He's actually planning on going the first week of March to get fitted wit the guys.

I choose the style two weeks ago and the guys got fitted last weekend. Our wedding is close to prom season so we were advised to get the fittings in sooner than later. We're 3 months out

If you're renting, I'd go in a month to two months before. We went in November for our March 1 wedding because I wanted to get it done early and I knew money was an issue for a couple fellas, so they would have time to put the deposit down and then pay the balance on their rental.

We also went with a local shop and I think we did it about 4-5 months out from the wedding. I went with DH to make sure he got the right colour for the vests and ties. Also wanted to do it earlier since both groomsmen worked shift work and one was out of town half the time.

We picked out our options in October for our wedding this May. We went with Men's Warehouse. They said the guys needed to be fitted no later than the end of this month (February).

    1. Go to your selected store and decide on:

    a) Are your GM renting or are they buying?

    b) Pick out your favorite options in both the buying and renting category. There are a ton.

    c) Ask the input of your GM BEFORE making your final choice as to whether you want them to go with your renting or buying option! (Helpful tip: if you expect them to buy, DO NOT make them buy a suit that cannot be worn at other events. AKA, stick with a gray/black as they can wear it to other weddings as a guest, funerals, job interviews, etc.)

    2. Once you have your GM input, set yourself up in the store's system so that they can keep track of all of your selections. The GM can then go to any store location and be able to know that they are about to order/rent the right items.

    3. Ask the store when everyone needs to be fitted by.

    4. Take that number (in weeks or months before the wedding, etc.) and ADD a month to it.

For example, they told us the guys had be ALL fitted by the end of February, we told THEM they have to be fitted by the end of January. Everything has worked out, but there's one straggler that hasn't done it yet, and we're already into mid-February.

    Hope this helps!

I worked for a suit/ tux rental shop for years. We use to tell people to start looking around for ideas once you had a color scheme in mind. Also, we would tell people to book an initial appt Around 4-6 monthes in advance to come in and put their deposit down, saving their spot, and to pick out a general style. Final measurements were due in 30 days before the wedding.

Depending on the couple I would sometimes suggest just the bride and groom come in for the initial appt so they could pick out what they want without a lot of outside influence. When a huge group would come in to help pick out the style things usually got a little crazy and everyone has an opinion....

I would tell them as soon as possible. They do not live wedding like you are right now. It took us about 2 months to get them all in. I would start further out and send them friendly reminders once a month for a while. I would just say get them in and cross it off your list!

From the vendor perspective, making your selections and having your groomsmen fitted are really two different parts of the process. It may differ in other areas, but here (Rochester, NY) the earlier you book, the more you save. The closer to your date you get, the closer to full retail you pay and the fewer value adds are included with your package.

Once your date is firmed up you can start making selections. The groomsmen are usually coming in to be measured 3- 6 months out and everything should be wrapped up about a month in advance of your date. If someone gains or loses 20 lbs or more they should probably be remeasured.

Bottom line, earlier is better -- you don't want to be worrying the week of your wedding if your cousin from Cleveland got his measurements in.
