How long should a reception be?

Ashley, on February 11, 2020 at 12:09 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

Hey, I am getting married on a Friday afternoon with about 80 guests. The ceremony starting at 11:30 am and ending about 12:15 at the latest. (I want a short ceremony). We're having appetizers and a photobooth available to guests as we take the next hour to take pictures. We plan to finish with pictures by about 1:20 and begin eating at 1:30. We are not having alcohol, the food is buffet style, and we don't plan on cutting a cake but doing cupcakes instead. There will be music playing and we may do a first dance. I want to leave the venue by 3:30 ish. Is that too early? I could buy more time, but I don't want it to be dragging on. I want people to still be able to enjoy their Friday nights and relax. (We aren't party people so nobody will care about the lack of dancing or anything).

That’s fine if you don’t want to dance. Our reception was 2:30-5

I think if you don't plan to dance then that's fine too. Usually people allot 1-2 hours just for dancing

That's on the shorter side for a reception, but it's fine if you want to skip some of the typical reception traditions and dancing. Also 45 minutes is not at all a short ceremony.

I think that's fine especially since it's a lunch time event.

Thank you, I put 45 minutes as a really rough estimate in case anyone trips or my nephew gets shy. I would prefer it to be 20-30 minutes.

The timing seems good for a Friday afternoon wedding.
