How long does wedding gown alterations typically take?

Robyn, on April 17, 2020 at 9:05 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10

So pre-COVID, I did my wedding dress shopping in my South Florida hometown. I just heard from the bridal salon today that my dress, which was supposed to arrive today, won't arrive to her shop until May 1st because of COVID-19 delays. Then she has to ship it to me in California (pressure) Smiley surprise I found a local bridal salon that's still open, but how long does wedding dress alterations typically take? Like a range...just need to know if I should start panicking now or on May 1st for my June 6th wedding.

It really depends on how much they need to alter, the material of your dress, etc. For me, I only need a couple of places tucked in and a bustle added, so my seamstress said it wouldn't take her long. On the flip side a friend of mine had a very big, very detailed, many layered gown that needed to be taken in at some spots, let out in others, hemmed a couple inches, and some sleeves altered. Hers took several appointments and about a months time to get done. That was, however, long before all this stuff happened and her seamstress was a very busy lady to begin with...I would talk to your seamstress and let them guide you on if they would be able to complete the alterations in time...

I think you’ll be fine finding someone to do it for you in that timeframe but be prepared to pay a rush fee. For instance, the place I’m using would charge me a rush fee if I needed more dress in less than 3 months. It also depends on how much work you need done as well. My dress was ordered a size up so I need it taken in, hemmed at the end to match my heel size, and also get a bustle added so I need 3 fittings.

The seamstress said she couldn’t quote me on time/labor until I had the dress in hand and came in for measurements since I didn’t buy the dress from her, it’s a completely new relationship. So I’m in limbo until I can get the dress in my possession, but it’s still on it’s way to Toronto from China. The dress is one size up so alterations to hem it and make it fit, I’m also adding vintages straps and a bustle. I bought the dress in early January. I thought I had so much time, le sigh.

Ok yeah at this point, I’m willing to do whatever I have to do. Ship the dress overnight, pay a rush fee, Stand there while she sews it onto me 😂 just so I can have it altered nicely and comfortably for our wedding.tenor.gif

Lol! In the mean time have you scheduled an appt with a seamstress? I was able to make mine while we’re in the midst of Covid. It’s not until June though.

I’ve spoken with her and they’re open, but she said to call when I have a tracking number and we’re sure the dress is on it’s way. The dress still hasn’t made it to the designer yet so it still hasn’t a couple of stops before it gets to me. This dress sure does get around - I hope it’s having fun in its travels since we can’t enjoy that luxury just yet! Fingers crossed that the borders up by then so we can go on our honeymoon. 🤞🏾

Prayers and wishes for you! My dress went through some traveling as well and when you get it you’ll smile so hard! It’ll be worth the wait. I completely forgot how I felt in my dress until I saw it and was able to try it in again. I’m sure you’ll feel the same.

    Hey!
    Fellow June 6th Bride.
I'm getting my dress altered the first week of may so that I can get my portrait done the next week. My seamstress said "don't worry, we will get it done"💜 I got a referral from another bride, I hope you get a wonderful seamstress too!Congratulations!
