How long does a reception usually last?

Im trying to figure out how long a reception usually lasts and work backwards to figure out when the ceremony should begin. Music for the reception has to end at 9pm and take down/clean up/everyone gone by 10pm. Please help!

From the weddings I’ve been to, 4-5 hours is pretty standard for the reception. We’re having a cocktail hour, followed by a 4.5 hr reception.

Ours is dinner too so from like 4:30 to 9.

Our venue comes with a standard 4 hour time frame but since we are having cocktail hour to take more pictures we will be adding an additional hour.

We're having our entire weddding be 5.5 hours, 6p-11:30p. Ceremony is 30 minutes, cocktail 1 hour, and reception is 4 hours.

I had a 6 hour (1 hour cocktail) that barely was enough for all the dancing and to see people. Dinner takes an hour.

We are getting married at 4:30 PM and then 5 PM-10:30 PM cocktail, reception and send off. I feel like in the north east (and I am sure other places but that's what I am used to) weddings go much later, till like 11/12. However, I am getting married in the South and the absolute LATEST they would do is 11 PM. Since we are doing a send off, we are ending at 10:30 PM and people will be in the buses by 11.

Our ceremony will be 5-5:30, cocktail hour 5:30-6:30 and reception 6:30-11:00!

Unlikely that many venues will allow a Reception to go past midnight. If you have the stamina and think that your guests will stay the distance consider organising an outdoor event in private garden and invite the neighbours!
