How long do floating candles last?

augustbride, on June 29, 2009 at 9:45 AM Posted in Planning 0 6

I found some great glass cylinder containers at the Dollar Store and I?m thinking of doing centerpieces using them with a floating candle. Our reception is 3.5 hours. How long do the floating candles last?

Depends on the kind and size you get. I actually tested mine out to see how long they'd go. After 10 hours they were still burning so I knew they'd make it fine through the reception even if they were lit super early. I got mine from Michael's. Whatever you get, just try it out first to be sure

Thanks Laura. I plan on buying good quality candles (not from the Dollar Store) and do a trial run to see how long they last.

Another thing to consider is air current. The last wedding we were at our table was under a fan and the floating candles lasted only a half hour before one side burned down so low they fell over and went out. The votives only lasted a half hour more, so try to keep them out from under any air vents or ceiling fans.

You know that was a good question! I am also using floating candles as centerpieces and in our pond and I never even thought about how long they would last!! I guess I just figured they would go all night!! Lol...I will definately have a trial run now!

    Hi

You will find that the burn time depends on a lot of different things. You need to make sure that if you are burning them in a cylinder container, try them out. Make sure you leave the flame down from the top a couple of inches. Is the reception hall drafty? If so, you'll also want to try your candles with a draft to make sure they don't go out. The candles may burn better if you place them on a disc and then float them on the water. This will help to ensure that the water doesn't get to the wick. Tealight candles should burn at least 4 hours, larger candles will burn longer. But these times are under the best conditions are are for good quality candles. Some cheaper candles are made from paraffin wax (petroleum based) and can leave a soot ring around the opening. The cheaper candles also may not have a good quality wick. If the wick burns down too quickly, it will reach the wax and go out. Just some thoughts....good luck and have fun!

Our floating candles burn from 6 hours (small floaters) to 24 hours (large floaters).
