How Important HMU Trial?

Emily, on September 7, 2017 at 11:42 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 30

Planning DW so I'll only get there a few days before the wedding. How important is the HMU trial? Specifically hair? The salon I like has done the style I like multiple times...wondering if it's a necessity

If it makes you feel better, I skipped the trial since my wedding is 3.5 hours away and I wanted to save the money.

I don't wear makeup and won't be wearing anything my mom/MOH can't apply for me, so I'm not even doing makeup. My hairstyle is not that hard and her pictures/reviews do enough justice for me sooo.

    WINGING IT.

I would definitely recommend a makeup trial if you have time for that. If you're confident they can handle your style well and have done hair with similar texture/length, I'd say you can skip the trial. Just check with the salon--some salons require a trial (at least mine did, and a few others I inquired with).

Good luck, you'll look beautiful no matter what!

People on here act like stuff like that is super important but I don't really think it is. I'm sure you will look beautiful either way. I didn't do a makeup trial but I did a hair trial. My friend/bridesmaid did my makeup. It looked good. If you want you could try to schedule a trial for the day you get into town? Or the day before the wedding?

It's completely up to you. If you trust the hairstylist and makeup artist then you probably don't need a trial. I think most people who do HMU trials aren't sure if they'll like a hairstyle on them or a certain makeup look. But if you're set on one style and not worried if it will look good on you I would forego doing a trial!

I know it's more complicated with a DW wedding, so I understand your hesitation. I will say that one of my best friends didn't have a trial and on the day of her wedding, the girl couldn't get her hair to hold curl and just wasn't generally understanding what she wanted, and she was sitting there crying in the chair. I remember feeling horrible for her! (and also thinking, I will FOR SURE get a trial before my wedding). I had to re-curl her hair right before the ceremony. You may have no problem at all, but it's hard to say for sure without having a trial.

Thanks everyone! Adding that I've had a few up-do's done before and my hair texture & length is (so I'm told) pretty easy for up-dos...if that makes sense?

@Diana literally my fear! but my good friend is a hair stylist maybe I can ask her if my hair is good for what I want?

I was totally going to try and learn how to do my own the way I like it. I'm glad people are reaffirming its possible Smiley laugh

@Miranda I'd invest in some quality hairspray if you do your own! I think the hairspray quality makes a difference

My wedding was out of state so I skipped the trial. It was totally fine, I just showed them some Pinterest pictures and ended up loving my look!

I think it just depends on how important it is to you. I'm not doing a hair trial because my wedding is 4 hrs away. Also, I am really not dead set on something looking exactly like a inspo pic from a magazine. My stylist and I have talked and she knows my hair.

I got married back in my hometown, and I live ten hours away from there now. So, I hear your frustration about traveling back and forth for trials.

That said, my first hair and makeup trial was really not great. My hair was falling out after an hour, and frankly, my makeup artist just didn't work out for me at all. But, I did wear that makeup to my shower and bach party, after fixing it to my preference. So, it didn't end up being a huge deal to me.

I gave my feedback (politely) to the hair stylist, and she adjusted accordingly. My hair looked great on wedding day and held up beautifully! I ended up finding a new makeup artist, and I did a trial with her the night before, for the rehearsal dinner. Luckily I was extremely happy with her! She did an excellent job. If that hadn't worked out, I would have ended up having to DIY my makeup. And I'm comfortable with makeup, but I'm no artist. It would have been fine, but not great.

Is it a big deal to you if that ends up happening? If you feel you have to skip the trial, I'd just make sure you're extra clear about what you want, don't be afraid to speak up if something isn't working, and bring some of your own products to tweak and adjust as needed.

I would do the trial. The day of your wedding is not the day to work things out.

I went through this too since I'm getting married six hours away. I did a MU trial when I visited my venue, but not doing hair until the day before the wedding.

I would try to find a way to do a trial. I HMUA trials for my wedding and looked/felt great after the trial and on the actual wedding day. I was in a wedding recently where we went to a reputable salon who does a lot of weddings and we all looked pretty bad. We did what we could to try to fix it, but it could have been prevented if the bride had done a trial and either booked elsewhere or came back with more specific ideas and requests.

If you're not used to wearing a ton of makeup I would recommend a trial. I was SHOCKED how much makeup was on my face and would have wanted to wash it all off and start over if it was my wedding day. But because I had the trial, me and my MUA know that she will start with a lighter hand on the actual day.

If you feel confident then you can probably skip the trial... though leave extra time on wedding day in case you feel like you want to adjust something.

I did my H&MU trial mostly because I wanted to know how it would feel to have all that makeup on and product in my hair - too greasy? too heavy? does the hair style hold for hours? So just decide if that's important to you or if you already know what you're getting in to.

I'm really glad I did my trial. I had a hairstyle picked out that I loved, but when she did it (and it turned out great), I hated how it look on me. We were able to rework it, but the day of she'll do it better instead of just transforming one hairdo into another.

If it makes you feel any better I didn't do a hair or makeup trial. My makeup turned out fabulous. I also wore my hair in a bun though so you can't really mess that up. My question is considering it's a DW, what are you alternatives if you don't like the HMUA trial?

@FutureMrs that's a good question ... there are a lot of different salons in the area, just some are SUPER expensive.... I also have a good friend who's a hair stylist if sh*t REALLY hit the fan I'd have her do a nice bun or something. But that's obviously super worst case scenario
