Hey guys!

So before I started really delving into locations and vendors, I did some research online that really broke my spirits about my wedding. So many people we're saying its IMPOSSIBLE to do a wedding in Chicago proper for under 15k, that I would have to give up something that I want to make it work. It did seem that way for a while.

I got creative, I relentlessly googled and called people, and pending any crazy things happening, I will be having a Chicago wedding for under 15k next year. Here is how I did it for some inspiration for the low budget brides like myself.

-110 people

-Wednesday 7/3/19

-West Loop, Chicago, IL

-Venue: $1,000

We found an amazingly beautiful place with a built in bar, courtyard outside, and roof with a skyline view to take photos on. The reason it is so cheap because we are getting married on 7/3/19 which is a Wednesday. Everyone has off work the next day thought and our ceremony won't start until about 6:45pm. The venue cost includes taxes, chairs, tables, and a stunning bridal suite that's better than any hotel room.

-Booze: $3,300

The venue provides bartenders and charges $5.50 per person/per hour for open bar. This low package includes a champagne toast, two draft beers, and normal call liquor. 4.5 hours of open bar.

-Food: $6,000

I am getting heavy apps and stations catered from a suburban company so they are cheaper than city places. The venue does charge a fee for using outside catering, but it will end up being cheaper than their preferred caterers.

-Dessert: $200

Ordering a cake from one of my favorite local bakeries. Some desserts will be included with the catering.

-Decor and Flowers: $550

My parents own a thrift store so we are collecting vases and mason jars for that. I will be making my own wood slice centerpieces and we will put the vases and ball jars on them with dried out wildflowers that I will collect. We will have to purchase bouquet flowers.

-Invitations/Save the dates: $75

We are only doing an invitation that is similar to a save the date. I will be designing these myself with Photoshop and then using a deal on a website like Vistaprint to print on card stock. Then guest will be directed to RSVP at our website.

-Night of Hotel: $125

We are going to use Hotwire.com to book a hotel for the night of the wedding. We can pick the area and star rating and it shoots out a price. You don't find out the hotel until after you book.

-DJ: $800

We have gotten many quotes on Thumbtack for around this price.

-Photobooth: $100

Purchased a photobooth through groupon. Great reviews and super cheap.

-Photography - $1200

We are doing photos and first look at the venue before the ceremony, then the photographer will stay at the wedding until about 11pm. Thumb drive only, no hard prints.

Dress & Tux: $1200

He will rent his tux, I am in the market for an off-the-rack dress at a discount store. I refuse to pay more than 1k for a dress.

-Day of Beatuy: $250

Pretty standard. Not doing anything crazy, just with reliable people with good reviews.

GRAND TOTAL: $15,000

Well I thought it was obvious that these are hopeful numbers and its a plan, not already done. As stated, the wedding hasn't happened yet. Once I have the wedding I will do a follow up post with the actual numbers. It boggles my mind that people get so angry about talking about estimates and hopes. No one is looking at this post and booking their wedding because of it. Its just a tiny bit of hope in an expensive industry.

The issue is that everyone builds a budget with what they consider reasonable numbers. Ask how many couples have gone over that, or blown it entirely.

You have a good starting place, but it doesn't mean anything until everything is paid for, which is why it isn't all that helpful to many people here.

I'm glad you find it inspiring and hope you are able to stick to it.

No one is angry.. We're just pointing out that it isn't an actual budget breakdown. Its not obvious. This is literally what your post says: "I will be having a Chicago wedding for under 15k next year. Here is how I did it for some inspiration for the low budget brides like myself."

It isn't until i read all the way through, each line and subsequent comment stating: "Nothing is set intone"; that i realize almost none of this is actual contract numbers. We're not trying to rain on your parade, but simply point out, that this point can be taken in a misleading way.

I had hope to spend $5k on a wedding... It's not realistic for my area, for what we wanted. Hopes and plans had to be adjusted.

I don't think anyone is being a hater, I just think things come up that you don't think of as you plan.

For us it was the following- I would say all of these costs "arose" the last 3 months or so prior to planning:

Extra, last minute alterations for my dress -295.00

Comfier shoes to change into after the ceremony- 45.00

Postage (that I stupidly didn't include int he beginning). Don't forget you will need postage for the invite and for the response card, so if you think you are spending 50.00 on postage, you really need to double that. I think I would up spending about 90.00 on postage.

Ceremony music fee (DJ charged an extra 200.00 for this. I didn't read the fine print of the contract, and the initial price I paid only included cocktail hour / reception music)

I don't see tips here for anyone-- we wound up tipping the below amount the day of- and also make sure you have cash on you to tip

    DJ- 200.00

    Maitre'd - 150.00

    Day of coordinator- 200.00

    Photographer/ second shooter - 200.00/100.00

    Hair/ makeup artist- 80.00 total (40.00 each)

Welcome bags for the guests that stayed overnight in the hotel 10/ bag- 120.00 total

    Thank you cards 45.00

I am also curious about your food. You mention heavy apps, but will there be a meal?

Also- do you need transportation? What about bridal party gifts? Are you having a rehearsal dinner or a next day brunch? Are your parents hosting at all? if yes do you need host/ hostess gifts?

I am having an extremely casual wedding and I do not plan to do a lot of the extra frill that are normally involved with some weddings. Most of my guest are local and will not get welcome bags. My whole bridal party lives in the city and will take ubers to the venue, the apps are passed at cocktail hour and then there are stations for food during the reception, I am not hosting a brunch the next day and i am not having a bridal shower, I will not be giving a guest gift as every wedding I have ever gone to I do not even have the gift anymore, my invitations have a digital RSVP so they will not need double postage, I do not have a day of coordiator my mom and MOH will help along with the venue host, I included tip money in the quote for catering and photography.

I will give you props for the dress alterations, did not think about that. But hopefully I find a dress for under the 1k I budgeted and that wont be an issue.

If I could go back and edit it to say "Here is how I plan to have my Chicago wedding for under 15k", I would. But this forum doesn't allow it. I didn't expect people to rip me apart for it on here, I wish so badly I could just delete the thread. Instead of getting excited by other brides I just feel tore down by strangers that feel the need to disprove me. Again, I just wanted to tell brides MY PLAN so that they can also be hopeful with their budget. I realize that I may go over, but this is my goal.

    DON’T DELETE THIS!!!
I’m actually impressed that you were able to get that venue for that price. I’m also doing my wedding in Chicago proper and reception in the suburbs and I couldn’t find something as great as this so kudos to you! :-)

I live in hawaii (super expensive) and was determined to have a wedding for 5k. I set up my budget by researching like you did and with two months to go I'm at $5,100 with everything paid for. People thought i was crazy but I made it happen! I think you sound realistic and I was under the impression that you were excited and encouraging, not stating fact. Don't let others get to you! I'm proud of you for not getting sucked in to overpriced wedding garbage. If you're looking for a non judgmental place to post things there's a podcast I listen to that has a super supportive fun fb page. It's called bridechilla. Xoxo

I appreciate this response so much, honestly. I feel very insecure and attacked by some responses and I’ll be the first to admit I’m overly sensitive. But your response and budget make me feel so much better!! A 5k wedding in Hawaii is insane, congrats girl you CRUSHED IT!

Her post is not a BAM and that is clearly indicated in her title. If you prefer those posts with definitive costs, then perhaps you could have just skipped right over hers. There is absolutely nothing wrong with an excited bride to be wanting to share how she intends to stay within her budget based on the research she has done and quotes she has received. That is what I got out of this post.

Great venue and great choice on the date! I'm from the Chicago area and that price is amazing!! DH and I were married on 7/3. He promised me fireworks every year, although sometimes a day late and he's never disappointed me - no matter where we happen to be, LOL! Happy Planning!

She said she’s doing an invite that is SIMILAR to a STD (I’m guessing she means style-wise).
