Hey guys!

So before I started really delving into locations and vendors, I did some research online that really broke my spirits about my wedding. So many people we're saying its IMPOSSIBLE to do a wedding in Chicago proper for under 15k, that I would have to give up something that I want to make it work. It did seem that way for a while.

I got creative, I relentlessly googled and called people, and pending any crazy things happening, I will be having a Chicago wedding for under 15k next year. Here is how I did it for some inspiration for the low budget brides like myself.

-110 people

-Wednesday 7/3/19

-West Loop, Chicago, IL

-Venue: $1,000

We found an amazingly beautiful place with a built in bar, courtyard outside, and roof with a skyline view to take photos on. The reason it is so cheap because we are getting married on 7/3/19 which is a Wednesday. Everyone has off work the next day thought and our ceremony won't start until about 6:45pm. The venue cost includes taxes, chairs, tables, and a stunning bridal suite that's better than any hotel room.

-Booze: $3,300

The venue provides bartenders and charges $5.50 per person/per hour for open bar. This low package includes a champagne toast, two draft beers, and normal call liquor. 4.5 hours of open bar.

-Food: $6,000

I am getting heavy apps and stations catered from a suburban company so they are cheaper than city places. The venue does charge a fee for using outside catering, but it will end up being cheaper than their preferred caterers.

-Dessert: $200

Ordering a cake from one of my favorite local bakeries. Some desserts will be included with the catering.

-Decor and Flowers: $550

My parents own a thrift store so we are collecting vases and mason jars for that. I will be making my own wood slice centerpieces and we will put the vases and ball jars on them with dried out wildflowers that I will collect. We will have to purchase bouquet flowers.

-Invitations/Save the dates: $75

We are only doing an invitation that is similar to a save the date. I will be designing these myself with Photoshop and then using a deal on a website like Vistaprint to print on card stock. Then guest will be directed to RSVP at our website.

-Night of Hotel: $125

We are going to use Hotwire.com to book a hotel for the night of the wedding. We can pick the area and star rating and it shoots out a price. You don't find out the hotel until after you book.

-DJ: $800

We have gotten many quotes on Thumbtack for around this price.

-Photobooth: $100

Purchased a photobooth through groupon. Great reviews and super cheap.

-Photography - $1200

We are doing photos and first look at the venue before the ceremony, then the photographer will stay at the wedding until about 11pm. Thumb drive only, no hard prints.

Dress & Tux: $1200

He will rent his tux, I am in the market for an off-the-rack dress at a discount store. I refuse to pay more than 1k for a dress.

-Day of Beatuy: $250

Pretty standard. Not doing anything crazy, just with reliable people with good reviews.

GRAND TOTAL: $15,000

Nothing is set in stone besides the venue. I do have a bridal party.

This is more of an inspirational post to let other girls know they can have their dream wedding in their budget. I realize some other expenses may arise.

Good job! It seems like you really put a lot of work into working within your budget. I was wondering about three things:

1-Did you include the cost for postage with your invitations?

2-Make sure you don't need the DJ to provide sound for the ceremony. This was a late surprise for us. (We're having a cello/violin duo play for the ceremony and cocktail hour, and wound up having to have our DJ come to the venue 2 hours earlier than planned to provide audio, so we've essentially booked double entertainment for our ceremony and cocktail hour.)

3-Be careful with the wildflowers. I've read horror stories of people picking flowers that they're unfamiliar with that cause rashes or severe allergies. I'd also worry about any bugs that might be in the flowers.

    Also, your venue looks amazing.

Make sure to add in tax and tips. I think tax in chicago is 10%....

Also, you're a year out. A would add an additional 10% cushion (after tax and tip) because things are going to come up. Hope you can stick to it Smiley smile

I did include the cost of postage! I am thinking to do a post card style invite and many of the 110 are in the same household so i think i will only need about 60 stamps.

As far as sound, the venue I booked has a great built in sound system! They really have it all idk how I found this place.

And thanks for the tip about the wildflowers. Ive seen some things on pinterest, but might be better to just go to a florist and get some babys breath and cute purple and green something-or-other to accent it.

Ok well thanks for your unwanted pessimism. I did included taxes and tip with my prices here.

I would just make a note on the original thread that this is an ESTIMATE of costs. Until everything is paid.

I wasn't pessimistic. Being pessimistic would be to say "There is no way you can do this." I was referring to the fact that you're presenting this as an accurate budget of what you are going to pay when it's actually just a very general estimate due to the fact the only thing you've really booked is the venue. This is what you want to spend, not what you actually have paid for things...

I stated where I got my prices from in the description of each item. I have researched a ton and am very confident in my budgeting skills as I use them for my career also.

If you feel the need to tear down other peoples excitement about what they are planning to do though, that's your own problem I guess.

JUST SO EVERYONE KNOWS, THIS IS AN ESTIMATE AND IS NOT ACTUAL PRICING. I MAY BE WRONG ON SOME STUFF AND APOLOGIZE.

She wasn’t being pessimistic, and I was thinking the same thing. Over a year out is a little early to brag about sticking to your budget.

Jesus ladies, i'm not trying to brag I am just trying to tell people that it is possible to have your wedding on a budget! I suppose I'll just delete it though, all the haters are making me sad. Hope the people that did have a chance to read this got the intent of the post.

No one is trying to be a hater. But like you said, people look to budget threads for inspiration so you want to try and be as transparent, and realistic, as possible.

    Plus you can't delete threads.

    “Haters”. Lol.

What you have here is a pretty good budget, definitely not a “look what I did”. If you only have one thing booked (as you said yourself, the venue), nothing else is firmly there and you could end up spending more.

Well I apologize for being excited about my budget and wanting to share how I planned to do it. Not trying to brag or fool anyone. Just can't win with some people.

Don’t apologize. I appreciated your post. There’s a lot of negativity on these boards but a lot of good information too. I know it’s tempting, but try not to engage with those who have nothing constructive to add. Good luck! :-)

How isn't it constructive? It's not a post wedding budget. It's a hopeful, inspiration post. I was so sure i could plan $5k wedding for 70 guests, in my area, it's just hardly possible. We researched, and adjusted to plan according to costs in our area.

I'd rather read actual numbers (what was paid/contracted), than hopeful/inspirational numbers.

I could do a breakdown, but all our vendors are booked, thus it's a more accurate budget. It's not simply inspiration on unbooked/non contracted guesses.

I like BAMs that include their costs, that's realistic.

Good call! Like another poster asked: are you having a bridal party? Unasked for advice: keep it to one or zero. Less stress, less drama, less cost! Your venue is a steal for that price!!! Congrats on being thrifty!!!
