How far would you ask guests to travel?

Al, on January 5, 2016 at 8:25 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9

Hello,

Almost all of my guests will be coming from the area where I currently live, but I'm struggling to find a venue within my price range that's close by. How far would you ask guests to travel (most of them probably won't want to stay in a hotel). Is an hour drive acceptable? We will be inviting about 70 people. If you had your wedding out of town, did you pay for your wedding party to stay in a hotel? I'm trying to do everything on a budget but without passing the expense onto my guests and wedding party...

In my circle everyone is so spread out (my family is in FL, RI, WA) so it's normal to fly. 75% of our guests are coming from out of state and even those within 30 mins will possibly get a hotel so they can party all night.

If your guests are all local and will not stay over, I'd say 45 mins would be my personal limit. Further than that we usually get a room.

I know people do it lots of different ways, but I am only paying for one hotel room that the girls will slumber party in the night before, then a few of them will share the night of the wedding. If the wedding party prefers a room with their SO (which many will) they will pay for that themselves.

The closest wedding I've ever attended was 45-50 minutes away. So personally, one hour doesn't seem like a lot to me. But I think it's rare to have a guest list that's located all in the same area so I can't really speak to that. I have guests in other states and even other countries. So comparing that to one hour... it doesn't seem like a lot.

Our venue is 2 hours from where we live so our families will more than likely stay the night. However, some may still travel back home. I am paying for my bridal party the night before and the night of the wedding.

Our wedding is going to be about an hour away from everyone. We live two hours from my parents and the rest of my family, and his family is all over the place. All of our friends are in town with us. Our venue is halfway in between, which seemed like the fairest way to do it without favoring and particular area (too much drama there). I don't think an hour is terribly long, but to accommodate, you could consider having your wedding a little earlier in the day in case people want to be able to leave before it gets too late.

Ours is about an hour and a half for a lot of people which I felt bad about. It doesn't seem like a lot to some people but my FMIL made a big stink, so we compromised and are starting the wedding at 4:30 so we are done by 10.

Our wedding was OOT for most of our guests. We had guests come from as far away as Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts to our Maryland wedding. We got married about 45 mins. from our hometown, so even "local" people still had to drive! We have also attended our fair share of OOT weddings, up to 3 hours away, and even for weddings that are "local" we always stay at a hotel because we don't drink and drive! You do not need to pay for accommodations for your bridal party - that is part of being in a wedding and is their responsibility. However, let them know when you ask them to be in your wedding where it is so they can plan for those accommodations in advance.

Thank you all for your responses/advice! I feel a little better about looking outside of my hometown now.

My family is coming from CA to NJ and my bestie is coming from NC. That's about it.

I drove 4 hrs for my cousin's wedding & didn't stay. The furtherest person I'm inviting is in Indianapolis (we're in Hampton, Va). But she has family about an hour away that she would stay with.
