How far is too far for guests to drive from hotel?

soon2bemrs2017, on September 7, 2016 at 4:22 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13

Is a half hour too far for guest to drive to and from a reception from the hotel? The hotels near our venue are not very nice, and I would feel rude suggesting a hotel that I wouldn't be comfortable staying at myself, so I was considering blocking a nicer hotel 30 minutes away from our reception. Our ceremony and reception are both at the same location so that would save guests some driving, and we only have a handful of out of town guests coming who would need a hotel. Would you be peeved if you were invited to a wedding where the hotel was that 30 minutes away?

I feel 30 minutes is fine, especially if it's nicer then the one's closer your venue.

Can you block some rooms at the closer one and some farther away and let people decide? That's what we are doing. The hotels near are venue are $400 a night. I do not expect everyone to want to spend that so I am blocking some about 20 minutes away and a couple hundred dollars cheaper. There is also Air BNB or VNBO if they plan on staying the weekend. Uber is a good option for those that have been drinking.

Personally 30 minutes feels very far at the end of the night especially when people have been drinking. I'd shoot for 20 or less

30 minutes is fine, but anything over that is probably too far IMO. I think you're good with that plan!

So happy to see this thread. I was wondering what to do as well! There is a "hotel" across from our venue but there is no way I would stay there! The next closest is about 30 minutes away.

I had the same issue the hotels closer to the venue are not very nice and Ive read they have had bed bug issues (GROSS). I blocked a hotel about 25 min away.

How much is a handful? If it's 10 ppl or up I would suggest providing transportation. The reason being driving in an area you're not familiar with is confusing

Are you considering providing transportation? We're about 2 blocks from our venue for the hotel block and my mom has been very adamant about providing transportation. We're getting married in the heart of a city, in a possibly cold/snowy/rainy season (oh the joys of early spring in NY) - and she can't imagine people having to drive even that far.

I know I'm going to have to provide at least a shuttle bus. Our venue is and hour away from us and for the family that is coming from Ohio on my fiancés dads side. I wouldn't want to have to worry about driving all the way to Atlanta when I already had a fly out.

I'd personally be fine with a 30 minute drive from the hotel to the venue, especially if the ceremony and reception are going to be in the same location. We didn't do room blocks, but we included an insert that listed nearby accommodations; guests can choose for themselves where they feel comfortable staying.

Thanks for the input so far! Just wanted to answer some questions. I'm not sure exactly how many people will be staying at a hotel because almost everybody coming lives within an hour of the venue and are from rural areas so they're used to driving far distances to get to most things (where me and FI live we have to drive about a half hour to even get to a walmart). If I to guess I would say about 20 of the 250 will end up getting a hotel. I was considering transportation so people staying at the hotel don't have to worry about a DD but I'm having trouble finding affordable options for rentals for that. Maybe I'll recruit some of my underage cousins to pick them up and drop them off and give them a few bucks for helping us out. People can also camp at the venue cite though I think that's more so included for people who have a little bit too much fun and are too drunk to go anywhere hahah
