How far in advance to order wedding gown?

Caitlyn, on December 3, 2017 at 6:51 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 32

How far in advance would be a safe zone to order your wedding gown? I've heard different answers from family members.

Start looking about a year out. Some designers will take almost that long. I found my dress in February was told six months, it came in 3 1/2 months. You don't want to be told you can't get a particular dress because it's too late.

I heard 8-12 months which really shocked me. It depends on where you're looking and what size you need. I had planned to order one online from a boutique in Utah and then went to David's Bridal to look at some similar styles to make sure I liked the fit on me and ended up finding one off the rack that required no alteration a year ahead of my wedding. But if you're buying from a boutique or designer that has to be ordered, most places estimate 6 months to get your dress in.

I ordered mine last week and it will be in in 16ish weeks. My cousin's FW ordered her dress back in August for a 3/2019 wedding, but she is tall and thin and her weight doesn't really fluctuate. The biggest concern on here is dress regret, followed by ordering the wrong size because you don't lose the weight you think you will.

I ordered 16 months in advance, but you should really start looking no later than a year before.

I was told by the bridal store that it takes 4 to 6 months for a dress to come in. You then need time for the alterations.

I'm already looking. One gown I like takes around 6 months to come in.

It depends where you buy from. If you're going to David's or buying off the rack you have a little more time. If you are going with a smaller shop, they typically (not ALWAYS) take longer. It depends on the designer. Mine took 9 months to come in. I ordered exactly a year in advance and I thought it was too early, but I'm so glad I did it. I had a 2 month buffer time before I had to start alterations.

I bought mine 14 months in advance. I knew what I wanted (and I hate shopping so I wanted to get it over with) and I felt good to check it off the list. Some can take forever to come in and alterations can take time. The sooner the better, I don't think there is a "right time" to buy one just whenever you're ready.

My wedding is April 7th, I ordered it beginning of August. It wasn't going to be in until Christmas eve. It came in on Halloween but it had snags and had go be reordered. It isn't scheduled to be here until March 5th now. Better safe than sorry I'm learning.

I was told it would take 6 months for them to make my dress. It's 9 months later and it's not here yet. Give yourself plenty of time.

1 year out start looking. I started looking early but didn't find mine until August from a boutique. They said it would take 6 months since it's a designer gown.

I ordered my dress at the end of July. The bridal shop said it won't be in until the end of February.

I bought mine off the rack, but still had to go in for alterations 3 times, about a month between appointments. All in all, it took about 3-4 months before I could actually bring it home.

I bought mine exactly a year before my wedding. The bridal shops where I looked all recommended ordering 10 months out. They said dresses take an average of 6 months to come in after they've been ordered (meaning sometimes it can take longer than that), you want to leave 2 months for alterations after it comes in, and it's smart to have around 2 months of buffer time for the dress to come in, just in case it takes longer than expected.

In order to avoid dress regret, you don't want to order super early (more than a year in advance). I'd say 9-12 months is when you want to be ordering.
