how far apart to put centerpieces on long tables

We are putting together rectangular tables to make long rows. I think the tables are 10 feet if that matters, but we will be putting 2 or 3 together per row. How far apart should the centerpieces go on long tables? If I figure 2 per table, That's 4 feet apart. Is that too much? Or do 3 at 3 feet apart? Naturally less is better for my budget. And what do you put between centerpieces like that?

Also, they are going to be 9" vases with flowers in water.

That's how our reception was set up! Our tables were 8 feet long and I believe we had 3 tables per row, and put a table at the top of the middle row, (So it was like I T I ) where hubby and I sat, with our family in front of us.

I bought long burlap table runners that went down the entire length of each row of tables, and then we had potted succulents in a variety of shapes and sizes... I think we had plants every 3 feet or so.

I'm leaving that to our florist. She has two birdcages per table and 3 vessels per table filled with flowers. I was panicking about it, then I realized I didn't have to worry about. I did find some help by looking at google images at tables with centerpieces and pinterest.
