How early is too early to book things?

Jessyca, on March 3, 2012 at 5:59 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

So I've got over a year and a half until my wedding. I've been trying to keep to the checklists (I have three that I compare, I'm a list lover... lol), but I'm at the stage of booking the reception and ceremony hall, and looking for the caterer. The question I'm having is that most of these lists start 12 months out, and I'm about 19 months out. Is it too early to start booking things? The way I work, I could probably have everything done in 8-10 months, and I'm trying to take my time, spread things out, etc. But I really think we've found "the place", and I'd really like to put down my deposit, but I'm not sure if there are any reasons I shouldn't book things this far in advance. I think I just talked myself in a circle, hope you followed. Thanks for any/all advice! :-)

    Nope.

We got engaged in April 2010 and had an appointment to look at venues in May. Then we booked our venue, photographer and DJ in July. We still had about 20 months to our wedding.

Go for it. You get first pick when you book early!

I would book early. I booked a year in advance, and set an appointment to discuss wedding things and found out they double booked us 8 months before our wedding. Be early and organized and you will be stress free. Some vendors may not let you. We ran into that with our cake. FYI (I know... why would they not want business???)

Not only will you have first pick, you may lock in 2012 rates (they haven't had time to think of their 2013 rates yet!) Plus you have their attention in the "slow time" so you can relax during the summer/fall while they're running around fulfilling 2012 brides events.

I was planning our wedding for September of 2013 as well. As long as you know exactly what you want and won't change your mind, I say go for it!! I couldn't nail down how much we wanted to spend on the wedding or how much we could save, so we never booked the wedding until now. But that is because I take a LOOOONNNNGGGG time to make a decision! Smiley winking

We got engaged July 2... we had our venue booked by early August. We had all of our other major vendors booked no later than mid September.

Not too early! I say, if you're happy with the vendor.. book them the moment you can. Smiley smile

I'm getting married in Oct 2013 and we have the ceremony/venue booked (same place). I've heard that getting the entertainment/photographer around this time can be important too- that way you get first dibs!

Everything else I'm taking my time on...just trying to gather some DIY ideas for things I want to customize/hopefully do for a cheaper price.

I am getting married in May 2013. I chose my venue and booked it right away. I have been talking to other vendors though and they are booking up for next year and they want you to have an exact date. Now I am glad I have one. I can start checking off my lists. It does make life easier.
