How do you do a hotel block? And is it necessary?

Okay, so I am obviously totally new at this. How do I do a hotel block for out of town guests? And what's the best way to do this since half of my family will want a nice hotel, and some of our family & friends would prefer something on the cheap that's close by. And if I do a hotel block, do I...

Matt has a good point--even if we'd been able to block rooms, the deal wouldn't have been as good for the guests as just booking an airfare hotel package through Travelocity or Orbitz. That's Vegas for you. :p

I contacted the Sales Manager at the Clarion hotel I want to use and they sent out a contract with a reduced rate. I blocked 20 rooms and if they are not reserved 30 days before the event, then they are released so they don't cost me anything.
