How do I wear sunscreen, especially on my face, without getting all shiny for pictures?

C&E2014, on June 18, 2014 at 2:03 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

So I've very pale and I start to burn in the mid-day sun around 20-30 minutes, tops. My FH is actually, somehow, even paler than me - and he burns 5-10 minutes faster than I do. Our wedding venue has big evergreen trees all around, and so there will be a little shade but not a lot until the evening. The ceremony will be completely uncovered (although it's only about 15 minutes long). What I'm trying to figure out is, I've heard for photos that you don't want SPF on your face - so how do I do sun protection? I'm not wanting to wear a hat all day on my wedding day. And then I still need to cover up my arms/neck...any suggestions for matte sunscreen? Any ideas on how to make my face not burn? Especially since I'll be wearing makeup, I'm not sure how to make the sun protection last all day. My FH, especially, will have to reapply often without getting a sunscreen sheen. Thanks for the help!

Like randee mentioned, most makeup has spf in it so that might help. i'm a super pale redhead so i totally hear you on burning easily. story of my life, sister! we are having a late afternoon wedding though... so fortunately i don't have to worry about this and i don't know what else i have to suggest for you. i'm sorry! good luck. maybe have your maid of honor carry a parasol to cover you when she can? haha. idk!

I use oil free matte and it has SPF 30 protection. I got it from dermalogica. Maybe something like that would work for you. It doesn't make your face shiny (that's why I got it and the SPF being in it was def a plus.

What about using the sun block that comes in the aluminum can? I use for FHs bald head and it doesn't look shiny after I spray it on him

I am also very pale and burn very easily! I hear ya. This is also a good question and something I haven't (but should have) considered already. I would definitely use makeup with SPF in it. I'm most definitely doing that.

Have you tried using a different sunscreen? I wear the following every day (in addition to moisturizer with spf and makeup with spf) and have never had a problem with it showing in pictures:

La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid for face

Vanicream Sunscreen Sport, Spf 35 for my neck and hands

Your local drugstore should carry them.

The Make Up Artist (Brigitte is her name?) who had the live chat on WW yesterday advised against using SPF on your wedding day b/c it creates discoloring and some kind of halo effect in the pictures.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I just kept hearing from wedding makeup things - "DON'T WEAR SPF" so of course the foundation I bought doesn't have any because they made me worry about it. Oh well, I guess I'll just get one of these high-SPF moisturizers instead. And I've used spray before and I thought after a couple of coats I still looked shiny - I guess I could go to the effort of washing it off of my arms before I put on a new layer. Jenna, I like the parasol idea a lot, although I'm sure I'd be putting it down constantly (and I'd feel weird making my MOH carry it).

My MUA said no sun screen because it makes your face whiter in pictures. I always wear sunscreen even in the winter so thank goodness my wedding is indoors. No sunscreen for me that day.

I have heard SPF can reflect the flash in professional pics and that's why it's recommended people not use it.

I regularly use Joure's matte tinted moisturizer which has SPF in it. But - I had my makeup done for my wedding and no idea what she used. Ask your photographer if she/he have any ideas? If not, I'd try to get out of the sun as soon as possible. Can your ceremony location be draped in any way so you are shaded during the ceremony?
