How did you pay for your wedding??

Ashley, on August 8, 2018 at 11:23 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 26
Hi! My fiancé and I are planning on getting married in 2020. We have a plan to put a certain amount of money each month into our joint savings to save for the wedding until the time comes. But I’m not exactly sure how to pay for things. Do y’all recommend a credit card and pay it off each month as time goes on? Or a check? Did anyone pay cash for somethings?? Just looking for ideas and tips!

We’ve been putting money away monthly as well and paying with checks, I used my debit card as well for online payment options.

We use checks for anything paid directly to a vendor (paper trail). For online purchases, we use a seperate account that we transfer money into that is pretty much specifically for online shopping. (That way all of our money isn't at risk if the account is compromised.)

We opened up an account at a credit union that only let's us take money out of the atm. This is basically or wedding account. Whenever we pay our bills we leave ourselves 100 for the week and put the rest in the wedding account. Also the budget tool on here comes in handy. Whenever i put money in the account i use that as a payment so that gives me an idea on what i have left to put away.

We used a credit card (to earn points) or checks to have record of payment.

We’ve paid everything as we go. Cash or debit..mostly debit. We put down deposits & make monthly payments. Our engagement is 23 mos. in total so it made things easier.

My FH and I are using whatever income we have + a small portion of our savings. I would recommend paying with a credit card (or even opening up a credit card) to earn points and build good credit (assuming you’re paying in a timely manner Smiley tongue). If a credit card is not possible, pay with a check. Try to limit paying with cash, and if you do, ALWAYS keep your receipts!!

I used a credit card for everything I could; there were no additional fees and I paid the balance. I think the photographer and officiant were the only ones I paid directly from my bank account because I could paypal the photog with no fee and the officiant wanted a check. With the "points" I get back on the card, I figure is free money. The credit card also offered me some peace of mind in case something happened with the vendor. We had the money ahead of time, but I also did some contract work that I put directly toward the wedding instead. I also earned a decent amount in gift cards from doing online surveys that I paid for random decor, etc. items. So much Amazon shopping.

I would suggest not paying in cash. If you pay by check, then you’ll have a paper trail if any disputes come up. Also, as some PPs said, a lot of vendors have a credit card fee they’ll add on. It may be a small percent, but if your charging thousands of dollars, those fees will add up!

We saved and saved and saved some more in our joint checking account and when it came time to pay vendors and such we either wrote checks to them our used our credit card and then paid it off every month. The only reason we used the credit card was for the cash back we got on every purchase. We figured as long as we could pay off the credit card each month we might as well take advantage of the cash back rewards.

I have made most payments via credit card for 2 reasons: 1. POINTS! 1% cash back on these huge transactions adds up quickly and is basically free money.
    2. Protection. If anything happens, if a vendor disappears or something, I can file a dispute with the card and have some chance of getting that money back. There’s no such protection with cash— they could easily take my money and run, or take my money and claim they never got it all or something, where the credit card statement also works as a clear record of the transaction.

(To be clear, I’m talking about paying off the credit cards as I go, if I’m acruing interest, I’m not really gaining anything by going for those “points”)
i also would advise being aware of credit card processing fees. I’ve heard of venues having the 3.5% processing fee (which is a TON on top when we’re talking wedding costs). But, not all do. Fortunately I haven’t come across it, but I have always checked first!

We've paid with credit card, debit card, and check. This way we have a paper trail no matter what. If you ever do pay in cash, be sure you have a receipt. We've used the credit card in the past, because we have the cash to pay it immediately and we get cash back, but some of the places had a convenience fee for credit transactions. I've used checks when I didn't have the card with me or because that would be easier for moment (i.e. my seamstress runs her business out of her home and a check would have been easier for her to process).

Short answer, a mix of things depending on the moment, but I'd caution against paying cash. There was a thread on here the other day about a woman having issues with a venue and part of her payments were in cash, but they were saying her receipts were forged. Not a common occurrence but something to be wary of.

My fiance has a CC that we are using to pay for the wedding and mostly everything. We are doing half and half and we do not have a joint account yet, but I have been putting money away for quite sometime now and will still use his CC to pay off the venue but will issue my fiancee a check for him to pay off card. He gets points for it. I am paying my photographer and flowers with check.

Debit card out of checking, that way we had a receipt. No credit card. We paid other vendors by a check as well at the reception.

If by cash you mean debit card, then then yes, cash.
