How Did You Decide What Order Your Wedding Party Will Walk Down The Aisle?

Lisa, on December 21, 2020 at 10:00 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 40
I still have plenty of time before my wedding (and therefore plenty of time to figure this out for my own wedding party), but one of my bridesmaids had recently asked about ordering/who is paired with who, and it brought up an interesting question:

How did you decide what order to have your wedding party walk down the aisle? Did you put them in order based on something like height? Or length of time you've known them? Or did you have them each draw numbers to determine order?

So my FH's best man and groomsmen are his father and brothers. We have the best man (dad) coming in first, with the brothers following in chronological order (oldest-youngest).

For my MOH and bridesmaids, I paired them by age! My MOH will of course walk with the best man, then the oldest of all the bridesmaids walks with the first groomsmen, and so on!

That is a cool idea! And an easy/fair way to decide the order. Thank you for sharing!

It was the easiest way for us, but I think we would have still done it even if our wedding party wasn't family!

Makes sense! I think things like ordering by age or by height or something that is completely factual is easy enough to do for any wedding party, family or not!

They walked in order of their standing. So, whoever was furthest away from us at the alter walked first.

That makes sense! How did you decide who would be furthest away from the altar vs closest to you at the altar?

I did it by who was closest to me. The closer we are the closer they stood to me. It also happened to be in height order lol.

So we did have our bridal party walk together.
We did groomsmen in a line walk down the aisle,

    -DHs twin -DHs father-Best friend
Then we had the bridesmaids walk in a line after the men were settled
-MOH -the other two rock papered scissored to see who would go next and last cause they were so nervous 😂😂 we didn’t have a preference though!

Traditionally the standing order is maid of honor right next to bride and best man right next to the groom as I’m sure you know. I’m not sure how people “traditionally” order the rest of their parties for standing, I’m personally doing mine in order of closeness in relationship. But you would usually walk paired with the standing order. I’m not super traditional so I’m doing it differently. First of all my maid of honor actually won’t be standing next to me, she’ll be second & my sister first. The best man will be walking with the last ordered bridesmaid because they’re dating & I thought it would be sweet for them for pictures and what not. So you can really do whatever the heck you want depending on how traditional you want to be!

I 100% did it in order of closeness to me, and my bridesmaids walked down solo. I had everyone besides my MOH sit in the first row instead of standing up at the alter. So each girl walked down the aisle and stood in front of the chair where they'd seat, so it ended up that those closest to me were also physically closest to me/the center aisle.

I had seven bridesmaids and a MOH--the order was DH's sister, DH's cousin, one of my cousins, another of my cousins, my three best friends from childhood in order of closeness and then my MOH.

Other than MOH and Best Man, it was honestly pretty random. I just kind of wrote down whoever first and that was the order and the pairing. We had 4 people on each side. All 4 were super important to us, otherwise they wouldn't have been in the bridal party so the idea of ordering them based on closeness didn't really make sense for us.

Haha, I love that they did rock, paper, scissors to determine the order! That's a fun way to figure things out!

I think that's very considerate of you to pair the best man with his girlfriend! I'm sure they'll love seeing the pictures of them walking down the aisle together at your wedding. I totally agree that there are no rules for figuring out the order!

Not gonna lie i did order it by height HAHA. but that was also a total coincidence anyway because it just worked out that the best men and maids of honor matched in height.

That makes sense! Very cool that you had them sit in the first row of seats, so they didn't have to stand throughout the whole ceremony.

I totally agree with you! Ordering my bridesmaids based on closeness doesn't make sense for me either - I have a completely different friendship with each one, and I don't want to feel like I'm ranking them (I don't think I could rank them if I tried, they're all equally important to me!). I like that you set the order completely randomly!

Haha, that's actually a pretty fair way to set the order! Did you do in order from shortest to tallest? Or tallest to shortest?

I initially set them based on my two maids of honor first and then everyone else how i just envisioned it and then i noticed that ironically it all ended up being by height!

My FHs best friends are in relationships with my sisters. It's actually how we met. So half of our parties are in relationships with each other and we are having them come down the aisle in couples, from oldest to youngest. So my oldest sister and her fiancé, my twin sister and her boyfriend, then MOH and bestman.
