How awkward is no music?

Madelyn, on January 27, 2025 at 3:25 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 38

Be honest with me y'all. Would you get married without any music? Our venue is gorgeous but they have a strict no music policy. No live setups, DJs or musical equipment allowed because it's a park venue under strict sound ordinances. I'm excited but a little worried. How awkward will it be with no tunes?

Fyi, my friend volunteered to sing for our first dance and father/daughter dance. They said she can sing without backup or sound amplification so we'll have our dances after all. I'm hoping it's enough to scratch that musical itch so to speak. I'm a little scared to walk down the isle with nothing. Will that be weird? It's a long walk.

I think it could work out fine without the music. The friend's offer to sing will certainly help for the several dances you do in celebrating your marriage. People should be fine chatting and visiting. Maybe some puzzles or other games could keep others occupied. Maybe you try for a quartet to sing pop songs? Also, is it acceptable to have an acoustic guitar or cello?

Musical instruments aren't allowed on park premises unless its part of a sponsored concert event.

Can people do clapping of their hands and legs to provide a rhythmic sound for your arrival? Sorry if this does not sound so good. I'm just thinking how to get around some of the restrictions. Or ask people to talk loudly to each other until you come near. Or have their phones ring. haha. I think some noise would be nicer Smiley winking

I like the hand clapping idea! Not sure about foot stomping in heels though 🤣

I would like it to feel romantic but I guess that's hard without music.

I was going to say two pats on the leg then a clap. That seems too much like We Will Rock You -- which is not really romantic. If you do one pat on the lap and two claps, it is better. People could be invited to a single sound like ahhh or oooo. I think any of those are a little more romantic than silence. Just tell people that no music is allowed but ask if they could help ... either with claps or sounds, that would be great. Let them choose between a couple options. It sort of would be like a movie soundtrack. Hopefully it would be a bit fun and different.

My friend offered to play her acoustic guitar and sing the whole way but the venue said she wouldn't be able to bring her guitar. Such a bummer.

That is too strict and narrow. A guitar is a normal and convenient instrument to have for a small gathering. Could she sing with headphones on so at least she has the music? Uh. Have everyone listen to their phone while playing a live music video on youtube. It will be out of sync, but still... are they going to prohibit phones? Ok. I'm straying too far. Just have some people make sound.

Ok. Have one side say "here comes" and, after that, the other side says "the bride." Have someone help coordinate the guests.

They're allowing her to sing live but the instrument rule is a hard one I guess. They don't want us making too much noise. I'm not sure I'm understanding the headphone solution.

I just meant the headphones if she preferred to hear the instrument recording as she sings. I guess it helps to know if they limit how loud people can speak or shout.

I will have to ask her about that. Asking her to sing without music for several hours seems like a tough ask. She's really not used to performing in front of others without some backing.

Sure. You could also guide the guests (who are more vocal) to sing or hum Here Comes the Bride. just have someone leading them. It would depend what your guests are comfortable with -- and not making them all sing -- if some do not want to. Tell them to start over from the top by the leader tapping the top of their head -- in case things get out of sync. Hopefully people could have fun doing this, but give them a choice what they would like to do.

I personally wouldn't want to walk down the aisle without any music at all. Also as a guest my favorite part of the reception is dancing especially since I don't drink. I wouldn't have selected a venue that prohibits music.

Did you know about this before you secured the venue? It should have been included in your contract and if you didn't have a contract that's definitely a red flag. All rules should have been disclosed to you in advance before you booked the venue.

This was on the contract but not really emphasized until we were locked in. Yeah... should have thought about it a little more.

I also love dancing. And music too.

Is there any way you could get out of this contract? I personally can't imagine going to a wedding and there not being any music of any sort. I also think it would make me super comfortable walking down the aisle with absolutely no music to help guide me.

They're actually letting my friend perform a few songs for the first dances. They won't let her bring her guitar or any equipment but she'll be allowed to sing for us.

I meant for the ceremony, but what sort of entertainment will they allow your guests at the reception? It would get boring pretty fast just to be sitting there without being allowed to dance and I'd be worried if they would consider mingling or games too loud.

At the reception it's just gonna be mingling. The venue does allow alcoholic beverages. Dancing would also be allowed.

But what are guests going to dance to if there is no music? I would just worry they would interrupt my wedding if they feel I'm being too loud or come up with other crazy rules before the day arrives.

Oh I thought she was just singing for the special dances like your and your fiance's first dance and parent dances. I didn't realize she was going to be singing for the entire reception.
