Hotel room pricing

sarah, on February 11, 2015 at 10:04 AM Posted in Planning 0 11

So we found a venue and a date but looking at the hotel prices in the area for our guests it will be almost $500 a night! We haven't signed the contract for the venue yet and I'm thinking of just switching to a different venue. I love this place but I want people to not have to break the bank to come. What would you do ?

I would go to the wedding but find a hotel that didn't cost me double what my car payment is

Maybe find a hotel that is cheaper and look into transportation for your guests? I know where I am getting married outside of the block rooms and the surrounding hotels are pretty $$ because of the time of year and some require a 2 night stay. So expensive!! But there are much cheaper hotels in the surrounding towns and transpo is affordable!

I agree with everyone above. I would never spend that much on a hotel to attend someone else's wedding- we aren't even spending that much for hotels on our own wedding night or honeymoon! Are there no other cheaper hotels in the area that you can go to? Could you consider getting a bus or taxis to help shuttle your guests from the cheaper hotels to your venue?

I actually didn't choose my first venue because of the fact that the hotel was $500 a night. That's an insane amount to expect anyone to pay.

Yikes that is crazy expensive! I have guests complaining about 140/night. Sheesh.

I am sure you did, but I would ask if you get a discount for having your wedding there, I got one for mine. I would keep looking around before you pull the trigger..

I wouldn't pay that much and would actually think it was rude if I got info saying that was the hotel and then finding the price. The hotels around our wedding area Western New York were around $120-$140ish per night. The hotel we ended up picking was Wyndham Garden, just 2 years old and they gave us a price of $119.00 per room whether it was 2 bed or a king bed (other hotels had a different price for the different room). I'm really happy with that price and think that it is more than fair for the people coming in.

I feel you. Hotels in Santa Barbara in the summer start at $250 a night, and that's for a motel. We ended up booking the reception at a hotel that costs $500 a night at rack rate, but only after we negotiated a room block that makes it much more reasonable for our guests. If you and your guests are used to higher costs, just do your best to find them deals. It's not your responsibility to make your wedding as cheap as possible for them, but all your guests will appreciate the work you put into thinking of their wallets.

Did you check to see what a room block rate would be for those hotels? It might be much cheaper than that. My room block rate was $200/night cheaper than their rack rate.

We're getting married over Columbus Day weekend and the hotel prices went through the roof. The hotel the reception is in gave us a discounted rate @ $239 a night. We got 2 other hotel blocks in the same square as that hotel for $269 and $309 a night. Those are just the prices in the downtown area. We also found a hostel (more like a bed and breakfast really) that has private rooms either with private bathrooms or shared ones for $85-$95 a night, I've been recommending it to our younger friends and some have already booked. For those with cars we have a 4th block that's not in the downtown that's $159 a night.
