My fiancé and I attended a wedding of our friend’s back in August 2019. We only stayed one night on the hotel room block. Almost 2 months later, i get a $500 charge from the hotel. I called to find out what it’s for. They told me the person who had the contract with the hotel has an unpaid balance....

I called to find out what it’s for. They told me the person who had the contract with the hotel has an unpaid balance. So they started charging random guests $500 each to make up the balance. How is that even ethical??? I am trying not to be upset with my friend, the bride, because we’re friends. But it’s been over 2 weeks already and no resolution. I even escalated it to corporate. Has this happened to anyone else before??

It should be whoever contracted the rooms who are responsible, ie bride and groom, not the guests. Good luck with this! That’s horrible!

This is insane! I have worked for a major chain in management, including front desk and haven't heard of them randomly charging guests in the wedding block. I would think your credit card company would reverse the charge since the charges were not yours.

Even this I haven’t heard of! The couple is responsible for the honeymoon suite/room that they book for themselves, but otherwise they just estimate how many rooms they’ll need for guests (who pay themselves)! This makes no sense at all! Everyone should be responsible for their own room that they choose to book. If they don’t end up using it, they’re still responsible, but that’s where it ends.

That is completely bizarre and I'm pretty sure it's not even legal!!! They can't charge you, a guest, for someone else's unpaid bill. I'm confused as to how someone could even have a bill that's not paid to begin with. You have to give them a card to have on file so they can charge it the next day. My guess is they hoped the people they charged wouldn't notice. If you don't get anywhere with the hotel, dispute the charge with your bank or credit card company. You did not authorize that charge therefore you shouldn't be charged for it. That is just insane!! Also, I would make everyone I know aware of what this hotel did (if it's a chain or local place) so others don't have to go through something like that.

What?! This is absurd. My contract for my wedding included that no shows or no pays would be charged to US, the bride and groom, because WE were hosting the hotel block. That’s absolutely ridiculous and feels illegal to charge guests at random.

Yeah keep on the corporate office! If they drag their feet, call the Better Business Bureau!
