Hotel charged us for someone else’s unpaid bill

Alice, on October 26, 2019 at 2:46 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 26
My fiancé and I attended a wedding of our friend’s back in August 2019. We only stayed one night on the hotel room block. Almost 2 months later, i get a $500 charge from the hotel. I called to find out what it’s for. They told me the person who had the contract with the hotel has an unpaid balance. So they started charging random guests $500 each to make up the balance. How is that even ethical??? I am trying not to be upset with my friend, the bride, because we’re friends. But it’s been over 2 weeks already and no resolution. I even escalated it to corporate. Has this happened to anyone else before??

I have never heard of this and they can't do that. They need to charge the card that they had on file. You need to dispute this with your bank/card company asap

I already filed a fraudulent charge case with them for this. I am just so surprised, a big hotel chain like the Hyatt would do something like this.

I am fairly certain they can’t do that if you paid for your stay. Are you sure it was actually the Hyatt and not a scam? Can you call the hotel or the bride to figure this out?

I have literally never heard of something like this happening. If I were your friend I’d be mortified! First of all I'm pretty sure it’s illegal for the hotel to charge you when you already paid for YOUR stay and your friend should also be disputing this as well! I hope everything works out!

I spoke with the accounting dept at that Hyatt, and that is what they told me. I have corporate involved now. So hopefully something will get done. If not, I am fully prepared to go to the tv stations.

I have never heard of such a thing but I would absolutely call my bank and stop payment and do what you are doing by contacting corporate until it’s resolved. Did you contact the bride?

If the person with the unpaid balance didn’t have a card on file then you would be responsible for their unpaid bill. Not sure about the random charges to other guest though.

I’ve been a hotel controller for 20 years. This is illegal and unethical. When you say you have corporate involved, do you mean Hyatt or do you mean someone in the management company’s accounting department?

Also, file a disputed with your credit card right away. This violates their user contract and the bank will resolve it.

That’s not true actually. I just contracted in with the Hilton and you are responsible if they don’t pay.

I have heard of the couple being responsible for unbooked rooms, but never the guests that booked! I’m sure it’s illegal.

Ok wow! I was actually just asking you if you had meant to type wouldnt and not would. I wasnt being rude at all..not my style..life is too short. I do however work at a bank and handle credit card disputes far too often on a daily balance. If a card holder had a confirmation for a certain # of nights for a certain amount of $$ then that is what they are responsible for. Just trying to help put a fellow ww bride/groom.

I was just a guest. I am not the one that contracted with the hotel. And yes, they charged me and some other guests that are just guests, and not contracted with hotel either, charges for others unpaid balance. I spoke to the bride, and she said her husband was working on it. I also filed a case with Hyatt Corporate Customer service and disputed the charge with my bank. What scares me the most is, how is the hotel able to charge my card two months after I stayed there?? Be careful who you give your card information to.

She is saying she was a guest at the wedding and not the bride. There’s no way that’s normal.

Any business that charges your card keeps a record of the transaction in their system. It’s just a matter of how many steps they need to go through to retrieve the data.

Stop bothering with Hyatt. Bounce the charge. Your credit card company likely lets you do it online.

I would ask for a copy of the contract the bride and groom signed and the paperwork from your nights stay. That’s ridiculous. Did they set aside a block of rooms for the overnight guests of this wedding? I imagine they did since they managed to connect you to the charges. I cannot imagine utilizing that would make you responsible in ANY way. It sounds like they got nowhere with the bride and groom and just started charging guests to recoup their loss. I hope you get this sorted out soon!

This happened to my parents for my brothers wedding. They put an unpaid bill on my parents card because the room blocks were reserved under their name. I’m not sure if they legally can do this, but it happened to them!
