Hotel Blocks - How far in advance?

So, I sent my Save the Dates out back in August. I sent them early, as we have a lot of people traveling from overseas, and we wanted to be sure they had time to plan. Also my shower is in November, as that happens to be the only time we'll be back in FS's hometown prior to the wedding.

So, after speaking to FS this week, seems people are already booking hotels, which seems a bit early, but made me think I should probably start contacting hotels.

Seems a bit early to me though, but guess it does no harm. What are your thoughts?

We are using the Hilton and they have been fabulous! They even set up a website with our picture, so guests can do everything online and still get the discounted rate!

Also, I get the points on my Hilton Honors (reward card just for staying at the hotels chains)card for EVERY ROOM people book for our wedding! I would recommend that brides look into this option for their hotel chain as well. We are planning on at least 40 rooms, for two nights, so by the time the wedding is over, we may have enough points for a free week at a Hilton to use after the wedding Smiley smile

We blocked our rooms a year in advance.

We just signed a contract, but we have no obligation to pay for unbooked rooms. I'm kind of curious about what happens to the guests who book if the quota isn't met (the discount only applies of 20 rooms or booked, or something like that). Also ask the hotel you're booking with if they have a complimentary honeymoon suite for the bride and groom. We get a free suite for the night if we have over a certain number of bookings in our block, and if we don't reach the number we get a reduced rate for the room.

We blocked rooms a year in advance, as soon as we picked a date and selected a venue. It's never too soon, I think.
