Hot dogs at a reception?

Karilynn, on December 4, 2018 at 2:10 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 19
My fiancé and I are obsessed with hot dogs haha. We would really love to have them at our reception. Does anyone have any ideas on how to present them in way that seems classy and not trashy haha. I’d rather not have them if it’s going to look bad.

I know a lot of brides do late night snacks during dancing. Maybe you could do a hot dog bar then or have a food truck come ?

Maybe as an appetizers? Like cut up hot dogs in 1" slices and add some "gormet" toppings on top?? A caterer or chef may be able to upgrade hotdogs

Hot dogs would be a great option for a late night snack, but definitely not as your main meal.

I agree with the other PPs that you could have these offered as an app or late night snack. Mexican hot dogs wrapped in bacon are delicious and are very popular to eat after my friends and I go salsa dancing. There is usually a truck that offers these. But I would not have these as part of the main meal.

My friends had them as a late night snack and everyone loved them! It was okay it was kind of casual because it was while everyone was drinking and dancing. I’d use them that way or as little appetisers like a PP suggested. The Pinterest photos are so cute.

Most people would not be happy with them for dinner. And, if anyone is in a gown or a suit, they are messy, and catsup, mustard, or chili toppings stain clothes. If you have money for a late night snack, okay. Not for appetizers. No one wants anything that messy while holding a plate and walking around talking during cocktails, the first time people get to talk during cocktails. Why not have a casual dinner for a rehearsal, less formal occasion, less formal clothes? People don't care if they drip on a washable top they can use stain removers on. Bit they care very much on $200 dresses, or $300 suits , on up, on items not machine washable, dry cleanables, which in gowns means no good stain removers or detergents are used. And if you are going to do hotdogs, don't dress them up, do them right.

It would be awesome if you had a vendor with a hotdog cart come by a couple hours before the reception is over! We did something similar for my niece’s quinceañera. Dinner was served between 5-6pm and the venue was rented out until 1am. We had a taco guy come by from 11-12am. It was a hit! After all those hours and drinking and dancing, that food hit the spot.

I would say they are great for cocktail hour. We may have them at ours as well because a boardwalk station with sliders and mini hotdogs is one of the options

Pigs in a blanket for cocktail hour is a common and relatively classy app! I’m always excited to see those (even though I would NOT be excited to be served a hot dog for dinner haha 🤷🏻‍♀️)

or PP’s idea of a late night snack hot dog cart sounds super fun! (Though probably quite a bit more $$ than the simple pigs in blankets appetizer)

    Also, this

lol why did pigs in a blanket not even cross my mind here?! So common! Smiley laugh This is a good idea, OP. If a late night snack is not in your budget.

Yeah, do them as a app or late night snack.

If this was the meal, I wouldn't eat.

    1. They would have to be all beef. Even then, I don't think I would eat them.

    2. I mostly think they are gross.

    3. They get messy very fast. I wouldn't want to try to be eating that in my best.

You could have pigs in a blanket and/or lil smokies during cocktail hour. I wouldn't try to use them during dinner courses, though. Smiley smile

Hot dogs and "classy" just don't really go together in my mind. I'd only find hot dogs an okay wedding food at the most casual picnic-type summer reception. Husband is from Chicago and considers a "good hot dog" one of God's most sacred food creations, but even he thinks they are messy finger food, not really appropriate for a wedding reception. Also, I once bit into a "pigs in a blanket" type appetizer years ago at a holiday party and ended up with the worst grease stain I've ever had on clothing.... They'd be a no-go for me if I'm wearing anything other than shorts & a t-shirt. (Plus, like a pp said, depending on your crowd, many people find the idea of processed meat disgusting no matter what.)
