Honeymoon Photos - Part 1: Hawaii!

Lisa, on August 21, 2022 at 1:54 PM Posted in Honeymoon 3 40
My husband and I recently got back from our honeymoon, and so I figured I'd share some photos and details about our adventures, just in case anyone was headed to the same places and wanted ideas of things to do!

Our initial plan in 2020 was to do 8 nights in Hawaii: 4 nights on Oahu, and 4 nights on Maui. However, we postponed our wedding and honeymoon to 2022 due to COVID, and when we went to rebook our honeymoon, the prices on Maui had gone WAY up. So, we changed up our plans a bit: 4 nights on Oahu, and then 4 nights in Costa Rica!
This post covers the Hawaii portion of the trip.
We stayed at the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort. At check in, our room got upgraded to an ocean front room. The view was amazing!Honeymoon Photos - Part 1: Hawaii! 1

We went to Waikiki Brewing Company for dinner and drinks, and saw a beautiful rainbow 🌈 on our walk there. Amazing food at this brewery!!Honeymoon Photos - Part 1: Hawaii! 3

The next day, we went to a cute beachfront cafe for breakfast, and then went to the Waikiki Aquarium. Honeymoon Photos - Part 1: Hawaii! 5

We intended for it to be a low-key day, since we had a long day traveling the day before, so we didn't plan any excursions or big adventures. Instead, we walked around the beach and around the town, ate dinner at Maui Brewing Company, and then watched the sunset from the beach at our hotel. I'm not a beer drinker, but my husband said that while Maui Brewing and Waikiki Brewing both had good beer, he liked the beer better at Maui Brewing.Honeymoon Photos - Part 1: Hawaii! 8

The next day, we went to Pearl Harbor, and walked through their interactive museum (which was free to visit). Very informative, and lots to read. We wanted to take the ferry over to the USS Arizona memorial, but we didn't have reservations, and the Stand By line was long, so we skipped it.Honeymoon Photos - Part 1: Hawaii! 12

We found a Groupon for surfing lessons, so we signed up! Neither of us had ever been surfing before, so we had no clue what we were getting ourselves into. They teach you the basics on land first, and then you go out into the water to try it out. This was SO FUN!! They had a photographer that joined the lesson to capture photos and videos for everyone, so these next two photos were taken by him.Honeymoon Photos - Part 1: Hawaii! 14

On our last full day on the island, we went parasailing! This was my husband's biggest request when we were initially planning out our honeymoon. I'd never been parasailing before, but willing to give it a try. It was fun! Very calm and peaceful. The view from the top was beautiful.Honeymoon Photos - Part 1: Hawaii! 16

They took photos for us that we ended up buying, so these next two photos are ones that they took for us.Honeymoon Photos - Part 1: Hawaii! 17

We ate lunch at Hank's Haute Dogs, which my husband learned about from the show Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives. Really good food, and an especially really good curry ketchup!!Honeymoon Photos - Part 1: Hawaii! 19

For our last dinner in Hawaii, we did a sunset dinner cruise on the Star Of Honolulu! Dinner included a salad, crab legs, beef tenderloin, BBQ chicken, and macadamia nut ice cream. A lot of food, but it was delicious! There are fireworks every Friday night in Waikiki, so we also got to see fireworks from the boat.Honeymoon Photos - Part 1: Hawaii! 20

Overall, it was a lot of fun, even though we mainly did touristy things this trip. Groupon also helped us save money on activities that we were already planning to do. Next time we visit Hawaii, we'd definitely stay in an Airbnb instead of a hotel, and also do more hiking and seeing the rest of the island.

We definitely made some beautiful memories!! The surfing was so fun, I'd love to do it again someday. My husband loves watching the food network. He enjoys cooking, and he gets a lot of his ideas from that channel. When we travel, I handle booking the hotels/flights/rental cars/etc, while he handles finding which restaurants have the best happy hour deals, or where the best local places are, etc. Many of the places that he finds, are places that he learned about through the food network, and they all end up being fantastic! Oahu has to be one of my favorite places. My fiancé and I recently went back in February as my MOH was on location on the island and we took advantage of that! There are so many amazing things to do there! And the beaches are stunning. For anyone planning on going - renting a car is totally worth it. There's some great places that you just can't get to without a car. I also strongly suggest a full day tour (I use Viator to find a lot of mine) as you can really see some spectacular sites!!

I'm so glad you had fun! Hawaii is too beautiful to miss!

It's definitely a beautiful place!! And I totally agree, the beaches are amazing. I've heard that renting a car is the way to go! We were considering it, but ended up deciding against it, due to high parking costs at the hotel and also the activities that we planned on doing were pretty much all walkable from our hotel. Next time we go, we're planning to stay at an Airbnb, and will definitely rent a car! What sites do you recommend driving to?

    Oh my god so many!!

Lanikai Beach is probably the most beautiful gorgeous beach I've ever seen, on top of which the sand is like clouds. And it has a really big shallow section of the water. We went out a FAR distance, and I was still standing with the water just under my bust line (I'm only 5'2"!). It gets crowded because its so gorge, but if you get there early enough and get a parking spot pretty closely, its so so worth it.

Kualoa Ranch - it's where they filmed Jurassic Park (among a ton of other things). We did the self driven UTV tour (You get an open air jeep to yourself and you follow in a caravan). So worth it. It was like 4 hours, you see the whole area and its unbelievably gorgeous - the views of this place were beyond. Though, as a warning, you get SO DIRTY. You're out in the open driving through dust and mud and stuff. I've never been so dirty in my life. But it was worth it! Right outside the area is also a great beach and a macadamia nut plantation that has some of the craziest flavors!

Waimea Falls - Its about a mile long hike (but pretty flat, no big hills) through a straight up rain forest that ends at a beautiful waterfall. You can go swimming in the lake that's there (I didn't) and the hike and the waterfall are beautiful.

Hanauma Bay - Either the bay itself or the lookout - we did the look out. Its a beautiful over look of a really pretty beach.

Halona Beach Cove - Also sometimes known as Cockroach Beach (I do not know why) or From Here to Eternity Beach. I've never been down to the beach (its a climb but there is a path) but the lookout point that includes the Halona BlowHole is cool. The beach is beautiful (and if you know the movie, a cool place to go) and on a really clear day you can see out across the ocean to Moloka'i, one of the other islands. You can also drive just slightly down the road to Sandy Beach and see the blowhole from another angle.

The Byodo-In Temple - set in the back of a huge cemetery where you can drive through and see the different sections for the different religions, its one of the most beautiful and peaceful places I've ever been. The mountains behind it, the quietness that it evokes - beyond. It's a sister temple to one in Kyoto Japan.

Koko Head - apparently a fun hike (not my jam) but a really gorgeous area. Because the whole island is basically a bunch of volcanoes that have gone dormant - the texture of Koko Head looks like someone ran their fingers down the mountain. It's really funky.

Tantalus Lookout - really really great place to watch the sunset. From it you can see Diamond Head, all of Waikiki, and Ala Moana. In fact you can see all the way out to Pearl Harbor. We took a picnic up there and watched the sunset. Not a ton of parking, but if you time it right its a breeze (there's also a second parking lot that's not far from it that you can walk from).

And finally, of course, the Dole Plantation - Its honestly worth it for the Dole Whips. If you haven't experienced a Dole Whip its delicious. Its a combination of pineapple and vanilla ice cream that is blended into the most delicious soft serve you'll ever experience. You can only get it, the official version, from 4 places - the Dole Plantation, the Aulani Resort on Oahu, Disneyland, and Disney World. I live in LA so I've had it a bunch at Disneyland - and its even better at the Dole Plantation. Personally, I love the float version (pineapple juice on the bottom with soft serve on the top) its beyond delicious.

If you are there are the right time, Sunset Beach is always a good time, especially if you can catch a surf competition. Shark's Cove is a great place if you're looking to see a lot of ocean wildlife (its like a giant wading pool at low tide). It's on the north shore, which has like really adorable shops and restaurants too.

Wow, this is all awesome info!!! Definitely saving this for the next time I go back. These places sound incredible! We did hear about the Kualoa Ranch, and almost went there, but ended up going surfing instead. The hiking and waterfall spots sound just so beautiful! Thank you for taking the time to type this all out!

I wish we had done some hiking in Hawaii!! We ended up deciding against it because we didn't want to rent a car this trip, but I've heard it's totally worth it. If you end up doing the volcanic hikes, please come back and share photos, I would LOVE to see pictures and hear about how it was!

Thanks for sharing Hawaii too. I've been there, so it is not as unique as the Costa Rica ones. Glad you had so much fun. It helps to see the end product of all the planning. We will probably have a humble honeymoon ourselves.
