Honeymoon in Thailand?

Tatiana, on June 23, 2017 at 2:21 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 27

So my soon-to-be hubby had the idea of going to Thailand for our honeymoon because it's such a cheap place to stay in (except the flights) and its different.

Anyone have experience with going there or had their HM there?

When's the best time to go?

Any input or advice welcome!!

You should definitely go! If you fly budget airlines, it's really not that expensive. We did a tour through Affordable Asia and went to Bangkok, Koh Samui, and Phuket. We flew Air China and stayed in four star resorts. Our total cost was $2,100 and that covered flights, hotels, breakfast everyday, lunch half the days, and a few optional excursions. If I could go back, I would spend a shorter amount of time in Bangkok and do more of the islands instead. I heard Koh Phang Nga is great.

We went bamboo rafting and to an elephant sanctuary in Bangkok (I would do research on which this if I were you, we went to one of the more humane ones where you don't ride on them or watch them perform - it's a sanctuary and for rescue elephants). We also went to a night market that was so fun. They have a river market that's fun to explore. It's definitely a tourist trap but you can get cute things from there. Try coconut chips!

In Koh Samui, we went ziplining and around the beach town. We also went to the Ang Thong Marine Park. So gorgeous but be careful, I smashed my foot open on coral while snorkeling.

Phuket has James Bond Island and the Phi Phi Islands. Both so beautiful and quick boat rides. Lots of canoeing opportunites. Phuket's party street, Bangla, was soooo much fun. Drinks are equivalent to, like, three dollars USD and they give you free shots of tequila with everything.

I would recommend drinking bottled water only but I didn't die from ordering a drink with ice in it or brushing my teeth with hotel sink water. All three of our hotels gave us two water bottles per person everyday. All the food is so good and so cheap. Buy street food at your own risk. A girl on our tour group got hit pretty bad with Montezuma's Revenge but she was also not drinking her water and eating everything from random vendors.

Their seasons are opposite of ours. We went in February so it was mid-summer. It was perfect weather but the mosquitoes were out to get us.

The only thing I can definitely say is I was a bit worried being an American tourist before I went there and I felt completely safe the whole time I was there.

Tatiana, I agree with Sarah's comments overall, but I disagree with her "Their seasons are opposite of ours" part. I went to Thailand in Sept/Oct and it was crazy hot. From Lonely Planet:

    High Season (Nov–Mar)

A cool and dry season follows the monsoons, meaning the landscape is lush and temperatures are comfortable.

Western Christmas and New Year’s holidays bring crowds and inflated rates.

Shoulder Season (Apr–Jun, Sep & Oct)

April–June is generally very hot and dry, with an average Bangkok temperature of 30°C. Sea breezes in coastal areas provide natural air-con.

September and October are ideal for the north and the gulf coast.

    Low Season (Jul–Oct)

Monsoon season ranges from afternoon showers to major flooding.

Some islands shut down; boat service is limited during stormy weather.

    Be flexible with travel plans.

Rain is usually in short, intense bursts.

But to answer your question, I would definitely recommend going to Thailand for your honeymoon. There's lots to do and see. My fiance and I had a great time there when we went (albeit, it wasn't for our honeymoon, but still). Good luck!

@Bellz - I guess it depends on the day. A girlfriend of mine went in December and she said it was more like late spring/overcast and no sun. I just meant typically countries in the Southern Hemisphere experience opposite seasons from us. It's a little different when Thailand has three seasons. I just meant don't go during our winter expecting to bring pants and jackets. We were there the last week of February and it was definitely not cool nor comfortable - we experienced the crazy hot as well! Smiley smile

We are going there for our honeymoon! We leave in 16 days! We are flying into Phuket. We got roundtrip flights from San Francisco to Phuket for $700 per person. We are then heading to Koh Yao Yai for 3 days. We also heard Phi Phi is amazing and Koh Samui. We may skip Bangkok altogether. Doesn't sound very relaxing. We are leaving most of the trip open so we can just go where we want. We may even fly to Bali for a few days. We did book Sinthaya Resort for the first 3 days. It's gorgeous and really reasonably priced. $85 a night for this room.

My FSIL is backpacking there with her boyfriend and LOVING it. It's so cheap there you have great buying power. I would do it if we had time to get passports in order. Passports take months ahead of time and I don't think either of you can owe back child support or even back taxes to get a passport I'm not 100% sure but something to research

That's really awesome. I never really thought it would be safe for Americans traveling abroad. Shows you just how closed minded me and the fiancé are. We love food and would love more bang for your buck. How do you get around ? Is everything by your hotel?

I used to live in Thailand. It is my absolute favorite place on earth! The reason FH and I decided against it for honeymoon is 1. We wanted a new place that neither of us have experienced before. 2. Unfortunately the presence of active cases of Zika virus. Since we plan to TTC right away, we don't want to risk it.

Unfortunately awful things are happening all over the world every day, including America. Although there are many horror stories on the Internet surrounding Thailand, we did a girls trip and never felt unsafe.

In Bangkok, the city was literally right outside our hotel. We could walk to do a LOT of things in town but other activities required a ride. In Koh Samui, we were on a long road of hotels, some restaurants, and convenience stores. If we wanted to leave, we had to take a ride. However, this is the hotel we spent the most time out. It was on the beach with a private pool and had bomb restaurants. We only left to go to the marine park and ziplining. In Phuket, we were again on a long road of hotels but if we didn't go to the beach, we needed to catch a ride. There was not much near us.

They have uber in Thailand. It was our preferred way of getting around just because someone picks you up and drives and they don't hassle you about the money. Taxis and tuk tuks (open air taxis with neon lights and blasing music) also operate around the towns. I didn't see any tuk tuks in Bangkok, just the beach towns. They will try to charge you more than say, a local. A few tried to highball us so bad and all we said was "no" and walked away and they would lower their prices. We never paid any outrageous fares. They have things like motorbikes and mopeds basically but I wouldn't recommend them. A few people on tour company rented them and almost got run off the road or hit by a bad driver so many times. Also, we had an air conditioned bus to take us around to the group activities and on all of our longer excursions so we only had to worry about transportation when we were going out on our own.

My sister went there after they were engaged and had her photos done there. They were awesome! She did the elephant caretaker for a day and they LOVED it.

GO! I've spent time in Bangkok and the islands and that place is actually breathtaking. Not sure where in the US you are, but flights from the west coast are as cheap as $800. Once you get there, the exchange rate will have you living like King/Queen for $30/day. Bangkok is crowded and fast-paced but I am a fan of cities so I loved it- so much culture to take in. Phuket was cool but I much preferred Koh Samui, Ko Phi Phi and Railay Beach. I was so sad I didn't get a chance to travel up north to Chang Mai, but all my friends said it is wonderful. Enjoy!

My fiance and I are considering Thailand too!

Question for those who've been: Was there a variety of food there? My fiance and I aren't huuuuge fans of Thai or Asian food. Would that be a huge issue we'd run into?

@Caitlin, you can find other food, there are American restaurants there, but it depends on what area you would be in. If you are adventuring beyond the big cities it will be harder to find. Shopping malls tend to have variety in the food courts. I feel like you would be missing out on a big part of what makes Thailand such a great place if you were to try to avoid eating the local food. But there are still amazing things to see and do...

MscooedL: do it! You have plenty of time to get passports. If you pay for expedited processing you'll get them in a few weeks. Even without, they should come within a month or two. It's shocking to me when people don't have passports.

FH and I were looking at Thailand and Bali with a 36 hour layover in Singapore for our HM until our travel agent said Sept is monsoon season and to be ready for downpour rain everyday. We ended up deciding on Fiji (and unfortunately spending a lot more money) but I definitely have a huge desire to take a random trip to Thailand and Bali in the future! It sounds incredible.

I'd recommend going! We started our honeymoon in Hong Kong, then went to Chiang Mai and then Koh Yao Yai. It was warm, but rainy. It is so inexpensive! The only thing we'd change was having a tour guide in Chiang Mai.

Thailand is so lovely, just don't go in the rainy season. I know above it says 'short bursts', but one of the times I was there was in June-July and it was SO rainy ALL the time. It is still hot but you end up looking like this.

Also, it is certainly not cool in the high season. It's crazy hot in January which is why it's so busy.

If it's for your honeymoon I'd recommend finding some nice hotels to stay at because the whole place is overrun by tourists and backpackers. There are so, so many backpackers (I was one of them!). Try and go off the beaten track to avoid the crowds and find something more luxurious. The islands are perfectly set up for honeymoons.

Found it very safe (I'm white British, had no problems) but obviously you are abroad so you should always have your wits about you.

Food is amazing and so cheap.
