Honeymoon in London and Rome

Hi community!

Husband and I booked a flight to London in early December and would like to take a trip to Italy as well! We're first time European travelers and although this is our "honeymoon" we're hoping its jam packed with fun and plans.

I think we're planning to spend ~2 days in London and ~4 days in Italy, so we're contemplating taking a day or two from our Rome area to head down to the coastal area for a night. Would love recommendations for the best way to get down there, and where to go. We've had Pompeii in mind for a long time. We'll be there for 6.5 full days (after travel time for flights removed) and trying to figure out the best way to split our time, in addition to most economical housing and travel options.

We're interested in seeing some of the sights, like Westminster Abbey the Colosseum, but would also love recommendations for great places to eat and pubs/bars to try, cute neighborhoods to stroll through.

We're not tourist-trap type travelers, so local-appreciated gems are sought after- unless there's a place with something that HAS to be experienced in London/Italy.

I was thinking Airbnb may be our best way to stay, since we're not planning to stay much in our hotels and want something on the safer side. Have you stayed in an airbnb in one of the places we're heading?

I think we'll likely fly between London and Rome to make the most of the time we have. How do you recommend us getting around in each country?

What's the best way to handle money in each place? Do you primarily use credit cards or do you need to have cash in a lot of places? (euros and pounds i believe). Any tips for safety?

I realize i've put a lot of questions in here- hubby is leaving a lot of the planning to me so i want to get it right! I appreciate any advice!

Your honeymoon sounds like fun! Public transportation is great in Europe and definitely the way to get around. Traffic in London is usually a nightmare so you definitely want to take use public transportation. If you like art I would recommend the Tate Modern in London!
As to money, definitely have cash with you! Some places don't take card (or only specific cards). You should be able to use credit card in touristy places, but not necessarily in other places.
If you want to use public transportation in London get an Oyster Card. You can get it online.
If you want to go to Pompeii you can take the train. In trains in Italy keep an eye on your belongings though!

If you mean the Amalfi Coast, it is far. You can take the train to Naples and do a tour from Naples to Pompeii. To get to Amalfi coast you can hire a driver from Naples or Rome. I would not recommend renting a car and driving yourself to Amalfi Coast. I’ve stayed in Airbnb’s in London, Rome, Naples and Amalfi. The trickiest part when hopping city to city is coordinating with someone to meet you to let you into the apartment. Make sure you have WhatsApp and plan to have data throughout your trip. You might want to consider somewhere closer to Rome if you’re looking to just spend the night so you don’t spend as much time traveling back and forth. Or there are lots of day tours out Rome through Viator (your operator) who will coordinate all the driving so you can see something further away but not have to pack up and move into a new apartment/hotel.

Good choices. I went to both during December also. London gets really rainy by the way during then. Rome is so beautiful. It's really truly something everyone should see one day.
By now London is widely able to use credit card but Rome I would have some money exchanged. I also recommend oyster card for London.
I recommend you to Google festivals happening because festivals tend to be free. I remmeber going to one in London in December

You have to make a reservation (it’s free) a few weeks in advance but this is a must! Sky Garden in London! It’s a beautiful garden with an amazing view of the city. Order a glass of champagne and enjoy with your husband! It was one of the highlights of our engagement trip!

Also as far as must-see tourist attractions the Tower of London lives up to the hype, and then you walk the Tower Bridge over to Borough Market (get some street food and venture to the cute pubs along the water near there, we LOVED Anchor Bar).

Also don’t forget to try afternoon tea! There are so many options but we loved the one we enjoyed at rembrandt hotel!
