Honeymoon in Ireland? or Hawaii? i am so torn!

futuremrswmh, on March 19, 2018 at 1:03 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 32

FH and I have decided to scrap our original honeymoon plans to Mexico now that we have postponed the wedding until he starts his new (AMAZING) job. lol. We will be able to afford something nicer than just 3 nights in Mexico like we originally planned! We have both always wanted to go to Ireland, but we are also considering Hawaii for the beach type honeymoon. Ireland is our first choice but we are comparing pricing/things to do. I have never been anywhere so I am so excited but have no idea where to start! Any tips from those who have booked honeymoons to either place? Any great places to book through or must see things? Thanks Smiley heart

I don't have any tips but I would 100% go for Ireland if it were me, especially since it's your first choice.

My friend made an excellent point once: don't go to Europe post wedding because after all of that planning and stress, you just want to relax. Europe means go-go-go with site-seeing and making the most out of your trip vs. laying on a sandy beach and taking it easy.

I thought about that aspect of just wanting to relax but this wedding process has been a while in the making (having a kid and moving and all kinds of things lol). That being said, our wedding isn’t going to be anything over the top. It’ll just be family and close friends and very simple. So I’m not too worried about the stress. I like the idea of go go go lol

I have been to both, and I would vote Ireland. It was so beautiful and there was so much to do and see.

We stayed in Dublin and did three tours:

Northern Ireland: Black cab tour in Belfast, Giant’s Causeway, Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge
NOTE: this was my absolute favorite trip, hands down. I know two couples traveling to Ireland in the next six months and neither worked N. Ireland into their trip, and I have hounded both about that choice haha It is quite a haul from Dublin, was more expensive than others, and NI uses the pound which drives up cost of lunch, souvenirs, etc. so bear that in mind, but I loved each section of this tour. It was so incredible.

West: Cliffs of Moher, Burren National Park, Galway City

    South: The Blarney Castle, Cork

In Dublin we did tons of cool stuff too! We went to Christ Church Cathedral, Guinness, Jameson, the Irish Whiskey Museum, Teeling Distillery. We were there for seven days. We flew to London after for three days.

i will agree with a PP that it was the least relaxing vacation ever, and we walked over 90 miles in seven days. We went six weeks after our wedding so I think we had mostly decompressed from all the stress of the wedding itself. I have zero regrets.

We did rent a car but we found driving on the other side of the car and road to be too stressful. We had planned to drive through and spend the night in the south, so we took the car back and booked a day trip. I’ve know people who had no issues driving but I’m glad we did away with it.

If its top of the list go for Ireland! Hawaii can be a fun family trip later. There are a bunch of great guides available for stuff to do in Ireland. I would suggest study a couple of places before going so when you go it's extra exciting to experience the places you've read about. Whatever you guys pick enjoy!

That's what I was thinking too! He already has a 4 year old daughter, so this will be our last(and first) big chance for an awesome vacation just the two of us! After that its baby time so future big vacations will probably be family trips! I don't think I would want to tow kids to Ireland haha. Plus neither of us have ever been to Europe so it would be awesome to do something totally new for both of us!

Definitely Ireland. You can make it as relaxing or as fast paced as you want it to be. I highly recommend taking a trip to the Aran Island of Inishmore while you are there. It's remote and absolutely gorgeous. Perfect place to relax and be in nature. You can go for a day trip or stay overnight there. It was the highlight of the 2-week trip I made to Ireland in 2012.

I've never been to either, but I would definitely pick Ireland out of those two (I'm not as much of a beach person though either). If neither of you have been to Europe, I say go for it!

FH and I are going to Ireland in April! We booked through Groupon and it includes flights, hotels in Kilkenny, Killarney, Galway, and Dublin, and a car! It was about 2400 with the upgrades for travel insurance, car insurance, an automatic car, and direct flights. We planned it as a halfway between our engagement and wedding trip, and although it may not be as "relaxing" we are so excited to take in the culture and country side at our pace!

We looked at both Hawaii and Ireland and Ireland was significantly cheaper. We even added on an extra day before our tour starts and it was still cheaper than Hawaii. FH and I both have Irish heritage and have always wanted to go.

We had a similar debate between Ireland or a beach resort vacation. We decided to go with the typical beach honeymoon, and start saving for an adventure in Ireland when we are done paying for the wedding. The thought is that we will have more time and money to really enjoy Ireland later on.

Definitely Ireland! My family went to Ireland years ago and rented a cottage out in Achill Island. It was one of the best trips I've ever taken, and it wasn't a go-go-go trip at all. We saw and did a lot, but it never felt crazy like other trips in Europe. Irish people are welcoming and love to talk! It's mostly a relaxed country outside of Dublin, but even that was just a ton of fun!

Ireland! I think of a honeymoon as a once in a lifetime trip...so yeah maybe you’ll be exhausted after the whole wedding and busy honeymoon but it’ll be such a special trip that you’ll remember forever!
