Honeymoon Ideas with a Shark Fearing fh

Brenna, on March 9, 2021 at 4:35 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 20

I just wanted to see if anyone had ideas or great experiences for a domestic honeymoon that didn't involve flying to an island Smiley smile My fiance is ~uneasy~ about the beach and I know if he's uncomfortable, it will probably be fun for no one. All other ideas welcomed! COVID threw a wrench in our Rome-> Lauterbrunnen plans and I'm sort of stumped.

I'm not sure where you are located but a Disney World or Universal Studios is always fun! My friend did both parks with her husband as their honeymoon and they had a blast!

Does he like the mountains? Yellowstone? Or what about Las Vegas? Lots to do even if you don’t gamble or drink. Or maybe Vermont?

Thanks for the suggestions! Yellowstone or Vermont might be good options! We are pretty outdoorsy but I’m unsure how much I want to be roughing it on a honeymoon. Do you know of any great resorts in Vermont you’d recommend? Smiley smile

What about Lake Tahoe? There’s still a beach but it’s at a lake and there are absolutely no sharks plus the water is super clear. You are also in the mountains with plenty of hiking and cute charming towns with good restaurants/breweries

    Dear Brenna,

My fiancee and I went to Seattle for our first out-of-state trip and stayed on one of the neighboring islands called Vashon and then drove up to Bellingham. For our honeymoon, we want to go from Seattle, to Vashon, to Bellingham and then if we have time, up into Alaska! We're originally from Texas and lived in New York for school and have family in Michigan so we're not quite sure where we want to settle yet and I've always liked the idea of living on "The Last Frontier!" We've also always been really into riverboat cruises, although I'm not sure how the whole riverboat/cruise thing is going in general...

Anyways, thank you for your post! I would try for Alaska or Colorado! If you chose an airbnb right outside of a town that isn't too expensive, you should be able to have a long and blissful honeymoon with plenty to explore. I know that nature always puts me in the best headspace! In addition, purposeful seclusion during these times, rather than required, can be a game changer if you've had as hard of a 2020 as we have!

I would definitely try a resort or town near a large lake so you guys get the best of both worlds. There’s a few in upstate NY.

I'm not sure where about you live, but you could go to New York city, the grand canyon, Niagara falls. You could do a camping trip or a hiking trip to a national park.

I live in upstate new york and there are so many beautiful parks and beaches here without any sharks. If it wasn't for covid I'd probably have never discovered what was in my backyard. Lol

I’m a sucker for the ocean, so if I had to choose anywhere else besides a beach or an island I’d absolutely say GRAND CANYON! It was amazing there’s even other adventures like horseback riding and there’s these little “ghost towns “where you can learn how to sift for gold etc. not to mention, the Grand Canyon is absolutely breathtaking. You can also rent a car and drive down to other tourist spots in Arizona

Lake Tahoe is beautiful and the water is super clear, but it's SO COLD. Nice to sit next to but I wouldn't plan on swimming much unless you don't mind frigid water.

Haha I’ve gotten used to it now, starting end of June it starts slightly warming up.
It’s definitely much colder than FL waters

Some of the places we considered were: Charleston, SC; the Smokies; New England/Maine; Utah/national parks out west; and Alaska, before the whole cruise debacle happened.

We've been to Charleston twice and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for warmer weather, but not necessarily into beach stuff. Yes, they have lovely beaches, but there's so much more to do there! Great food, lots of history, and just gorgeous.

Maine is another place we've gone to, and are leaning towards returning to for our official honeymoon. Acadia National Park is there, along with plenty of other mountains, parks, etc. They also have a great food scene. If you're considering it, you can PM me any time for lodging and food recs!

We only spent one day in Asheville, NC and Gatlinburg, TN but the mountains are breathtaking! I'd go back here in a heartbeat, but would try to avoid some of the more touristy areas. It's a popular place for a reason, though!

Neither of us have gotten to experience any of the national parks out West, so that's the other contender. But we just love Maine so much that it's hard to decide.

Good luck! There are so many wonderful domestic options that you really can't go wrong!

If you come in the summer, Alaska is absolutely wonderful (well, it's wonderful in the winter too, but I wouldn't recommend it as a honeymoon destination at that time lol). There's a lot of different scenery-scapes you can have, two international airports, national parks, open water, mountains, seclusion, city, cruise options, quaint BnBs...

I live in Anchorage, and my favorite places are 2-4 hours south on the Kenai Penninsula. Look up Seward, Whittier, Homer, and Kenai Smiley smile

I empathize with your fiance. However unless you go on a shark dive, you will not encounter one.

Is there anywhere you have both wanted to visit?

We always thought if we couldn’t leave the country we would maybe do nation parks out west or somewhere on the mountains.

I know a couple of people have suggested the Grand Canyon, I will have to agree if you haven’t been. We’re going on a “mini moon” to Las Vegas and to the Grand Canyon for the day since my fiancé hasn’t been to either. You can stay in Sedona, which is beautiful, and easily drive to the Grand Canyon.

There are some amazing places in the usa! Why not try checking the glaciers and wildlife of beautiful Alaska! Or the Grand Canyon/Las Vegas, a trip many people group together. New Orleans has a ton of options for foodies and an amazing amount of tours! I love Washington DC, if you time it right all the cherry blossoms are in bloom and the Smithsonians are all free!! (Also the spy museum is awesome)
I'm pretty biased, but there are some lovely places in NH and Maine if you're looking for relaxing in the outdoors, the White Mountains are full of amazing views and some of them have easy and manageable hiking trails. Boston is an absolute wonder and my favorite city to visit!
