Honeymoon for $1,000?

Allisonkatbb, on February 21, 2020 at 7:32 PM Posted in Honeymoon 1 23

My fiancé and I are trying to pay for our wedding AND buy a house this year. So our budget is TIGHT. We want to spent $1,000 when all is said and done on our honeymoon. Does anybody have any suggestions? We live in Michigan and a lot of people have recommended traveling within the state but we'd prefer to go elsewhere.

Maybe consider a road trip into another state? Or Canada nearby?

Chicago is really close! We live in the Detroit area and this past summer we went down to Louisville. Tons of distilleries and breweries down there to explore...perhaps the Bourbon Trail?

What about going to Minocaqua in Wisconsin? It's like a resort town and has an awesome downtown. We are going there for a long weekend. For the hotel we booked it's right downtown and was under 300 for 2 nights. But there are rentals and things around there.

Have you tired to look in Mexico?! There are many options and some are all inclusive with food and drinks.

I'd say it depends on time of year and what types of activities you enjoy.
I live in Chicago so I'm biased and would say that's always a great option (museums, comedy, and theater type activities in the winter or lakefront, street festivals, bike rides, free zoo, etc in the summer)
If you and FH like theme parks you could look at Cedar Point (Ohio) or a Six Flags. If you like the outdoors, look for a lake town like a previous poster suggestedIf you like breweries/wineries, there's tons of them all over the Midwest. In general I'd say you could probably find something good driveable from you in the region, but if you're getting married when it's usually cold out you'd expand your options by checking Groupons and things like previous posters have suggested. You can also get airfare on points with a travel credit card sign on bonus if you'd like to go outside of driving distance (typically requires $2000-$5000 in spend in the first 3 months, but that's easy when you're paying for wedding and house things).Good luck!

I’m also a Chicago lady so I’m bias - but i recommend a baseball game, lake front cruises (fireworks are in summer Wednesday and Friday), window shopping, Lincoln park zoo (free), free beaches (some with sand!) and awesome restaurants. Look on Groupon and travelzoo. If you want something a little different keep going to Milwaukee. Also on lakefront, cheaper and fun brewery tours, baseball, etc. There’s BNB in union pier Michigan that awesome -Goldberry Woods.

What if you guys do a small trip this year and plan a large 1 year anniversary trip for next year? We are throwing around that idea.

Cruises are incredibly cheap and include all your food and drinks. Definitely look into that route!

My Dad recently told me about his honeymoon with my Mom. They had about $500 in the early 80s. They put a full tank of gas in the car, drove as far as they could, ended up at a casino where my Dad placed a bet for the first time in his life and won $1000. Filled up the tank again and drove all the way down the East coast and back having adventures all the way.

Anyway, I thought that was the perfect way to start a marriage. Heading off into the unknown, hand in hand.

We're in the same boat. We live in VT but we're heading to Portland,ME for 4 days after the wedding. It's about a 4 hour drive from us and I got an entire house on Air B&B for around $250 for the three nights we're staying--I admit our wedding is in mid-May so this is off-peak for Maine travel but we don't mind. We prefer quieter times.

We plan on site-seeing lighthouses (free), eating amazing food, and exploring. I might plan an boat tour or foodie tour if budget allows but it doesn't have to be these crazy huge vacations that some people plan. Whatever you do it will be special even if you book a luxury hotel for a couple nights in a nearby town--maybe one you have never visited before!

I know you said you’d prefer to travel out of Michigan, but if you do decide to stay, Traverse City and Pictured Rocks are amazing. I’ve also had a few friends travel to Florida recently for like $500 because their plane tickets were so cheap and they just got an air bnb, same with North Carolina!

Some all inclusive cancun resorts are actually around that price range. Try looking on southwest vacations. You can find some inexpensive 4-5 day cruises as well.
