Hiring a calligrapher is also impersonal?

Elaine778, on May 30, 2016 at 3:48 PM Posted in Planning 0 32

The comment section of the following article brings up the point that hiring a calligrapher to address your invitation envelopes is no more personal than printing out labels. After all, the calligrapher is a stranger, whereas you would at least be affixing the labels yourself.

Thoughts? (FYI, I have no opinion either way on this issue.)

I think a calligrapher is a lovely elegant touch and sets the tone of a formal wedding.

I guess that is true. A calligrapher is a lot more formal/fancy though, and shows that even if you didn't do it yourself a lot more time/money was invested. I personally like calligraphy more, but either works.

Honestly no one is going to know if you did it or a professional did.

    Following.

I'm worried about doing this at all myself. My 10 year old niece has better handwriting than me. I may do a calligrapher.

I have horrible handwriting and I honestly do not have any friends or family with nice penmanship. I thought about typing labels but I don't know. The last few weddings I've been to were word of mouth or an online invite. And I'm having issues with the formality of addressing couples that are not married. I hate the plus one. And it seems silly writing John Smith and Jane Doe

I downloaded a nice script font and printed addresses straight onto my envelopes. Easier than writing them myself, and cheaper than a calligrapher. And I think they look great!

I have pretty nice handwriting and I hand-addressed save the dates, but the spacing is definitely the hardest part! Even though it may be "less personal" than doing it yourself, I think having a professional do it doesn't suggest that you don't care about your guest, but that you're just not really equipped to handle it yourself, which no one can blame you for!

The calligraphy on my envelopes was beautiful and worth every penny. But it boils down to the abilities of the calligrapher. Not everyone produces the same quality of work.

I think hiring a calligrapher is a beautiful touch. I didn't want to pay so I got some calligraphy pens, practiced writing and then addressed each envelope.

If it was in my budget to hire a calligrapher, I would.

I've only been invited to one wedding where it looked like they hired a calligrapher to address their invites. Every other wedding you can tell the bride hand wrote them. And I plan to hand write mine because we don't have it in our budget to hire someone to do it.

I think spending money on addressing envelopes is a waste of money. People just throw out the envelope anyways. Me, I just got a nice pen and wrote the addresses myself in the nicest printing I could do.

Ehh idk, my friend had a calligrapher write out all of hers and TBH I think I threw it out? I may just do labels depending on price. No one really cares about the envelope IMO.

My handwriting is legible, but it's just not pretty. My MOH's mom had pretty handwriting, so I paid her to address our invitations.

If you absolutely can't hand address your envelopes, instead of labels print directly onto the envelopes with a pretty font -- like Lindsey did.

I have never looked at an envelope and thought, "What pretty handwriting! Can't wait to see these to get hitched!" OR "Ug-- that is *clearly* printed on a computer-- no way am I going!" so we just had DH address them. His handwriting is legible, the envelopes got where they needed to go, and that's all that matters.

Waste of money. Print it or have a friend with nice hand writing. Unless of corse you have enough money for it and a open bar Smiley tongue

It's not impersonal - it's thinking of your guests and friendly postal workers. You're ensuring all of them will be able to read the envelope, whether you make a label, hire a calligrapher, or spend forever writing names and addresses legibly.

I have horrible hand writing. I'm thinking of asking my aunt to write the addresses for me. Calligraphers do an amazing job.
