Hello! My fiance and I are having a small wedding. I have a photographer acquaintance, and I'm on the fence about asking her to be our photographer. It'd be great to have her there and involved, but she won't be able to enjoy things as a guest would. If she's not involved in the wedding, she won't get an invite. I don't want her to feel like she's only there cause I need something from her and only value our relationship in that capacity, but I would be paying her, and I'd rather give her the business than anyone else. What are your thoughts?

Is she a wedding photographer? Do you love her work? Are you prepared to sue her if she doesn’t follow through with the contract you sign?

I think it’s ok if the answer to all those is yes but just keep in mind that mixing business and friendships can sometimes have negative consequences.

Would you rather her be there as a guest or as a hired photographer. My sister is an amazing photographer but I would rather have her as a guest at my wedding than as a paid person. We hired someone who specializes in wedding photography.

I don't think it'd be weird since she wouldn't be invited if she weren't the photographer, so I agree with Sarah. If you can answer yes honestly to those questions, you're good to move forward!

Hi there Lisa!
As Sarah mentioned, do you love her photography work? If the answer is yes, and she is within budget, I don’t see any issues with hiring her for your wedding.
Make sure you have a signed contract in place, as with any other vendors, to protect yourself in case of any unforeseen circumstances or issues. The fact you are acquaintances make a contract all the more important
