Help!

Future Mrs. Lowder, on December 28, 2020 at 10:17 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 4
Hey y’all,

So I’m at a bit of a dilemma. When we were leaving our wedding the cards that went to gifts got mixed up and now we don’t know who got what. How do I write my thank you cards without knowing?

When you read the cards, some of them might be like "we hope you enjoy this gift" or something indicating they got you a gift so at least for those people you would know to say back "thank you for your nice gift" or whatever.

Did you get many physical gifts? Your registries may tell you who purchased them.

Go through your whole list, eliminate those who sent or gave a gift already. If some cards were knocked off, one or more may be missing. For those you have a signed card but don't know what gift, call them. Explain that people helping move gifts were not careful, and you have a gift tag . And feel just terrible not knowing what it goes with. Ask straight out, what it was for. ...It is so embarrassing, some people just fake it with a neutral thank you for your gift when this happens. And people are annoyed. And they ask about it later in person and it all comes out. Better, is to call them, up front, and explain, saying you hate the idea that they took the trouble to pick you out a gift, and you want to know. Thank them and send a nice card after you know.

Check your registries online. Some have a “thank you” list that identify the purchasers of each item (assuming the purchaser identified themselves). I know registries through Bed Bath and Beyond and Amazon have this feature. It’s been a lifesaver for identifying those persons who purchased something but did not send or sign a card or note with the gift. Good luck!
