Help Writing Vows

Samantha, on July 5, 2019 at 1:38 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 4

My FH and I are both very private people and had decided to write vows and read them to each other later that night (good for me because I HATE public speaking) but he recently said that he would like to read them in front of everyone...gulp. So I am sitting here trying to write vows from the heart and use him and the adventures we have had together as inspiration and I don't even know where to begin...all I have is his name. I want mine to be funny because I know if it's too sappy, then I'll cry. I tried using Pinterest to help get ideas but all it does is make me want to take other peoples vows and use them which I won't do. Do any of you have helpful hints when it comes to writing vows other than "just write from the heart"?

Instead of trying to write something polished right from the start, brainstorm all the things you want to touch on. Hit find any words that come to mind, phrases, etc, but don’t worry about order or complete sentences. Answer these questions to get the pen moving: why do you want to marry him? What do you love most about him? What does he do that always makes you laugh? What are you most looking forward to about married life?
Just don’t worry about putting things into sentences and polishing until you write your way into finding your direction. My worst habit with writing is trying to edit as I go, so just go your best to ignore your internal editor and write everything that comes to mind- you can remove and edit later.
    Good luck!

Friends of mine read their vows in front of everyone but the DJ cut the mic so that no one could hear them. It was intimate and very sweet and the couple just played it off as "technical difficulties".

This!! Plus, you can use the ones on pinterest of you want and change them to suit your needs. Think of them as a template to guide you. If those people didnt want others to be able to use them they wouldnt have shared them on the internet!

I googled and read examples of others. Practice reading them in front of a mirror. It makes it easier to read them aloud in front of others and helps with choking up
